Because of the great response I received, I've decided on Northern Florida. But now there's a third option.
My brother-in-law who lives close to the Alabama border has got me to thinking of Southern Alabama. Housing prices are lower, property taxes are way cheaper and the countryside looks beautiful.
What are the good and bad points I should know about Alabama? I'd appreciate your input.

As Remy said...go to citydata.com for a lot of information on any state/city you're considering.
 
I have done some research on that as well, but never made the move. There were more negatives than positives as far as we were concerned.
I agree to look at citydata.com. There is a program that allows you to compare two cities. You can google retire in Florida vs Alabama (very useful info). You can check the demographics on your chosen city. I like to check the local news stations or newspapers on line. I get on the city website to research utilities etc. As well as the county website. I check the proximity to medical facilities, dentists, veterinary hospital, banks, grocery shops, insurance companies, etc.
Alabama gets hit by hurricanes but also tornadoes. Check flood areas if around Mobile Bay for ex. Daphne, Fairhope.
I also make a list of the pros and cons for each location.
I hope this can help you a little in your decision.

Kind of a toss up, unless you want to be right on the water, Florida has more of that. There are places in Florida with lower housing prices, and while Florida's property taxes are higher it has no income tax, Alabama does. Both have some really nice places.
 
It's been a long since visiting, but Mobile and Gulf Shores always impressed me for vacation time. Loved the area.

Anyone remember Kenny Stabler and his popular bar there? .... on the Redneck Riviera
