I signed up for Ebates

A few weeks back I signed up for Ebates. I figured what the heck. I do a lot of shopping on Amazon, and they do offer ebates rewards. I am not going to make a huge amount of cash back, but got one check already, and have another on the way.
I needed a new comforter for my bed through Amazon and ebates. So I will get a small rebate in my next check. Also ordered a couple magazine subscriptions through magazines.com portal through ebates. What the heck.
I am not going to go nuts, but when I remember to use it, I will. I usually order my printer ink from Amazon, and can get a rebate too.

I love Ebates and Mr.Rebates, too. I do a lot of online shopping so it's a nice little "bonus", plus I use a cash-back credit card that gives me another little refund. Ebates sometimes offers a store gift card instead of a refund check and those can be even more money. This month I got a Macy's gift card for an additional 12%, because I do shop at Macy's quite often.

can you use ebates and be frugal on one purchase or does it have to be one or the other--just curious

I think you can be frugal. I only plan to use it on purchases I would make anyway. Like the comforter I bought. Plus, I pay on Amazon with my credit card, which gives me cash back...which I can also use towards my Amazon purchases if I pay with that card. So a double bonus.

You'd go to Ebates website, select the merchant, and then shop. You can buy as much or as little as you want. The rebate amount is automatically added to your Ebates account. They pay quarterly.

Looks to me like you have to give up all privacy on Google mail to use ebates. I am unwilling to do that.

 I don't understand, Jim. They need to establish an account with your email address, but I don't see any privacy compromised. (Of course, I joined in 2015 so I don't really remember.)

I'm glad you posted this, Marie5656 :) I've wondered about Ebates and if it was a legit thing. Too many scams going around these days and too easy to fall for something, you know what I mean? So, I'm going to look into it a little more. I shop on Amazon quite a bit and use a cash back CC, but it would be nice to save even more. Thanks for the heads-up on this.

This is what I do too. I have a little sticky note on my computer to remind me to go thru ebates when I order online. I like getting those checks on something I am going to buy anyway. I use the same credit card too and right now they are giving an extra 1% on purchases made with it. Got the email this morning and signed up for the extra rewards.

You just have to remember to enter Amazon through the Ebates site to get the rebates. It took me a while to figure out the process, but it is not hard.
AZ Jim...I have used my "throwaway" yahoo account as my email entry to Ebates. Also, they do not have access to your checking account info. You get paid either by check or through Paypal.

Join Mr.Rebates as well; I usually compare to see which one is paying more for certain merchants. Yesterday Macy's was paying 20% cash back but there wasn't anything I needed to buy. Today it's only 3%. My biggest problem has been remembering to go to the rebate site FIRST; once you put something in your cart you can't go back and get the rebate.

Ebates Member since 12/15: Lifetime Cash Back $832.54
Mr. Rebates' Member Since 5/2015; Cash Back Earned: $764.89

If I put it in my cart, I go back and remove it before I buy it. I keep a pad at the computer and write down what I took out of my cart. The next day I will open up a trip through Ebates and actually buy it. I keep a sticky note at the top of my computer to remind me to go through ebates before buying anything. They also send an email showing what you have earned so that's a good reminder also.

I guess I'm thick, but why get rebates? If you want to buy X , and it costs $100, so you have to have accounts, passwords, etc., etc., then you finally get a rebate checks of $10 etc, Why all the rigamarole? Why don't they just sell X at a discount of $90? . Servicing accounts, rebate checks and all costs money. Somebody is paying for that. How does Ebates make money?

They have your email account and password....

No they don't Jim. It can be confusing the way sign up screens are shown on some websites. They ask for your email address as your login ID, then they ask for a password. They don't mean your email password, they mean for you to enter the password you are going to use on their site, as shown in the picture below where the instruction is to use at least 8 characters. The option of signing in using your Gmail account is offered but I didn't do it that way, just as I would never use the option of signing in with my Facebook account, which almost everybody offers these days. I joined Ebates about 7 years ago.

Good for you Marie. I see you are already reaping the benefits. I've been an Ebates (now Rakuten) member for 7 years and I forgot to use it too many times. I've gotten back to it now and am able to use it at the main sites I order from Amazon, Lucky Vitamin (for my skin care products) and Walmart. I'm due to get my "Big Fat Check" this month.
