I Sure Love a Convertible

It’s a gorgeous summer day and once again I’m admiring some convertibles parked by the sidewalks. I admire the interiors too. For years we’ve both said we should get one. The wind could blow in our hair as we raced down the roadways.

Only issue with this dream is that neither one of us likes being in the sun. We won’t even open sun/moon roof on our car. In spite of that I sure love a convertible.

we had an MG convertible years ago... didn't matter how much I tied my air up, I could never get a brush through it, after a day out with the top down

My lady likes the appearance of the MG convertible. Whenever you see a WW2 film, there's nearly always a scene where a Spitfire pilot gets into an MG sports car, a convertible sports car. How I loved that MG.

Love the MG Holly.

When I sounded my wife out about a classic MG she wasn't against the idea, but she did remind me that dust and airborne pollen don't go down well with her asthma. It was the MG that I liked so I simply forgot about the idea until I saw something, perhaps in a forum, of someone who had a similar dilemma and found a car that looked like those MG sports car, but wasn't a convertible. Ooh-la-la, I like that, more importantly, so does the lady.

Snappy looking B. I really like the wheels. As you know, mine was British Racing Green and had wire wheels. Red would have been my choice but I didn't think I could afford the speeding tickets it would attract. When I drove my B, I was either smiling because it was so much fun to drive, or snarling because of the latest breakdown. Curse you Lucas.

I had a boyhood friend from school, and the family's home was within 15 minutes walking distance. The multi-talented dad was a sculptor in spirit (actually sculpted life-size, in wood, as a hobby) and a science buff; he drove heavy equipment for a living. One of his projects was repairing & reconditioning an MG TD convertible. He had it up on blocks for a long time. The car fascinated me at age 11 or 12.

How long does it take to shovel out a foot of snow and clear the ice? Seems like you'd be late for work an awful lot. Is the carpet sodden with rain all year round?

When I bought a convertible about 9 years ago, my daughter followed suit and bought one too.

Between my late wife and I we owned 17 convertibles over the years. For 20 years I did not own a car, I drove company cars. Some of those were convertibles.

I keep a cap in the car so that I don't get wind blown.

That TD was the very model that I sought. The car that we have shares about 85% of it's DNA with that MG TD.
Dressing in the era of the car certainly draws in the comments. But we still can't upstage our MG.

Besides my current red Jeep above, I had a 1964 Impala Super Sport, 4 speed manual trans behind a 327CI engine. I had it from 1966 to 1968. Mine was dark blue, white top, and white interior.

2 Convertibles were a cold waste during the winter cycles. 59 white Buick / bucket seats & White 60 Chevy flags.
After the 2nd I all and forever swore off the stupid. Always 4x4 trucks forever.

Back in the 1980s I bought my wife an MGB that was not running. I brought it back to life and got her a personalized license plate that said "Mumsy". Our son was in college in Tallahassee and loved to come home and borrow the MG, he hated that license plate.
I still have that license plate tacked up on the wall.

Great story, I can just picture your son with a car that he loves but that licence plate, does your street cred no good at all.

This mid 1930's Daimler Rye Cabriolet is a magnificent beast.
There was a good smattering of pre-war cars on yesterday's
classic run through The New Forest.
