I surrender Charlie to a dog rescue organization tomorrow

Mr. Ed

Be what you is not what you what you ain’t
Location
Central NY
Tomorrow at 4:00 pm. Charlie is allergic to chicken and poultry byproducts so I bought a bag of dogfood for him.
From the beginning Charlie was destined to fail at becoming a permanent member of our family. The first night, after driving from Pennsylvania to Central NY. I opened the door into the house and greeted by two of our dogs and immediately our Border Collie took a disliking to Charlie. Of course my wife took the side of her babies and Charlie and I slept in the spare bedroom.

The days that followed did not get better, as Charlie was blamed for everything which meant I was blamed for everything. I hired a trainer and an animal behaviorist for Charlie which helped a little. It all boiled down to money, I had doctor’s bills and we couldn’t anymore on training for Charlie, so advertized him for rehoming on the NoKill Network, Rehome, adoptapet and Rescueme, an alternative to euthanasia.

I taught Charlie socialization skills among strangers, and had him attend doggy-daycare to socialize with other dogs. I regret not keeping him but he is better off not living in this toxic environment.

Years ago, I got a female beagle from a rescue outfit. She was 16 months old and was house trained. She took to our cat right away. They became friends and would play with each other. There favorite game was one hiding behind a door or somewhere out of sight and then suddenly jump out at the other one. The cat was the funny one. She would jump straight up in the air probably 3-4 feet high. They also slept up against one another.

The cat was about 2 1/2 years old. The beagle would eat the cat’s food, but the cat wanted nothing to do with the dog’s food. After about two years, the dog started drinking lots and lots of water, so we took her to the Vet. She was diagnosed with the start of diabetes. We had to give her a pill once a day, but about three years later, she was able to come off of them. The Vet told me to not give her any sweets. She lived 14 years. The Vet said she had a good life. It’s tough to lose a pet.

Sorry to hear that, I hope Charlie finds a good home.

It's usually recommended for family dogs to meet with a newcomer outside the house, like in a nearby park first , before the new dog enters the home. If you get another pup, something to consider.

You gave Charlie a lot of love & I enjoyed hearing about him from your posts. I'm very sad it didn't work out, but I feel he will find a good home with people who will love him. You did a good job taking care of him while you had him. Remember the good time you two had together.

It is so tough to lose a dog. I had a Beagle puppy named Happy when I was 9 years old. She was so affectionate and slept in my lap. She was diagnosed with Distemper at 6 months old and had to be put to sleep. We then adopted Chauncey, who was a miniature poodle puppy. One night we went out to dinner and when we returned Chauncey had left his fenced-in area and pooped all over the house. My mother, who was a perfectionist, returned him without even giving him a chance to grow up.

I've had cats ever since. It is still no less sad to lose them.

@bingo, I'm so sorry about the loss of your husband and your beloved Peaches.

Thank you everyone for your sentiments, it’s too early to imagine getting another dog to replace Charlie. I am pleased with the rescue organization willing to take Charlie as I feel it is the best option for him.
