I think I got ripped off.....

Oh, the joys of being a widow (single) and 77 years old.

I try to be very cautious about buying off the internet. Most of my purchases come from Amazon, like cat food, cat litter, etc., so nothing expensive or useless. Yesterday, I was determined to try using my late husband's trimmer/edger for over-grown weeds around trees, lamp post, shrubs. I was unfamiliar with equipment like this because my late husband always took care of the yard. He was very particular and I could hear him whispering in my ear that I needed to do something with the weeds. My neighbor cut my grass the other day but he doesn't do any trimming and his zero-turn doesn't get close enough in places.

So, I got the manual that my husband kept for the trimmer (and all other yard equipment) in a cabinet in the garage and looked through it and it seemed pretty easy. Then, I watched a couple videos to make sure I understood what I was doing. No problem. Yesterday morning I got the trimmer down (he always hung it up) and tried to adjust the handle. There's a knob you turn to tighten the bracket when you have it in the position you want. It wouldn't tighten and the handle kept flopping back down. I have arthritis in my thumbs so anything like that is painful and I don't have any strength in my thumbs.

I was disappointed that I couldn't get the dang handle to tighten so I gave up. I looked up the part numbers online and decided to order new screws, a knob, and a new bracket. I Googled for Ryobi and several sites came up. I picked one, ordered the parts but I had a bad feeling about it when I did it and I should have listened to that voice telling me to wait. The parts were cheaper there then some of the other places I looked at so I ignored that nagging voice and ordered from them.

It said I should get a confirmation of my order in my email, which I didn't. And the biggest red flag should have been when there was no shipping charges on my order. I've been checking my credit card to see how much is pending for that order but it's only for the amount of the parts and no shipping....yet. I can't dispute it until it posts. I woke up at 4am this morning and got up to check for an email (there wasn't one) and to look at my CC again, which was still pending.

I think I got ripped off. Stupid me. I should have just gone to Home Depot, where he bought it last year, and asked the guys in there what I needed to do, but I was lazy.

Just a word of caution about ordering from a web site you don't know. If you "feel" you should wait or if you have red flags wavy, don't do it.

My son once cautioned me to look for the words - "secure payment" on any new site. I also like to verify WHERE these places are - physically. Often they are overseas and don't want to tell you where they are. That makes me suspicious and I have had to find some other supplier. Let us know if you get what you ordered - sometimes it works out.

Home Depot stores have a rental counter. The staff there are able to do a quick fix of such a minor problem, for you. Take the item to the HD store and ask them to tighten the screws and make the thing work for you. ASK for help, there is no shame in doing so. JimB In Toronto.

Good chance it's an overseas supplier and I have found communication can be terrible with them. This has nothing to do with you being a 77 year old window, I bet this company treats all transactions the same, poor after sales communication.

The advantage of using the CC is you can almost aways get your money back. If you can't cancel the transaction right now keep checking your card as you've been doing. As long as no unknown charges show up you should be fine, but I would expect a delivery fee to be tacked on.

During the epidemic, I ordered some items online as they were not available at the store and I was ripped off. The company, unknown to me, sent me a small order of toilet paper and was not the same as ordered but charged a full price which was stated on their website.

Maybe not. I have ordered before from an internet site and got no confirmation however the item arrived.
If it isn't legit, you can dispute it..
Don't worry too much quite yet. šŸ™‚ Maybe you got free shipping!
I agree with hearlady. Give it a bit of time. If you don’t get the parts then call your bank or credit card company and let them know. Not all companies have the same check out systems.

Back in January I ordered something online and it didn’t come. I called the company yesterday and they sent another order out. The woman was very caring and attentive. She apologized for the mistake, even though it probably wasn’t her fault. Some-rimes mistakes just happen. It’s not always intentional.

It is safe to report the company to see if it is reputable. What I mean is share the name of the company online, who knows you might get some answers?

@Colleen - If you have never used a string trimmer before, they kind of suck. I don't like them. They only cut down the weed tops, then the weeds grow right back.

Maybe it would be better to get some weed killer that you can spray on them, as long as you do it on a hot, sunny day with no chance of rain so it doesn't seep to the neighbor's lawn.

I have also heard vinegar is a natural weed killer, but I have never tried it. It will also kill the good plants, so keep that in mind.

Don't use GOOGLE anymore. It's awful, IMO. There's any number of better, less intrusive browsers out there and they are all free. For a search engine, use DuckDuckGo either as an extension or download the browser: DuckDuckGo — Privacy, simplified.

75% vinegar, 25% water with a teaspoon of dish washing liquid sprayed directly on weeds will kill them. Do it on a sunny day with no chance of rain. We have dogs so don’t use weed killer.

Love DuckDuckGo
It doesn’t send out cookies to the sites you visit but also gets rid of ALL advertisements

My suggestion also. Take the weedeater in there and they'll adjust it for you.

Meanwhile, either ask your bank to reverse the charge or give that delivery another couple weeks.

Wait...did you not get a tracking number when you paid?
Does Ryobi have a contact number? Find it and call them.

I think she just wants to trim the edges of her yard, though.

I love my trimmer for that.

If the weed eater is from Home Depot you're probably not going to get any help from them, they don't have any kind of service department, at least none I have ever seen.

Your best bet is to take it to a local mower shop, yes you will pay for their time but they are more inclined to be knowledable about the equipment.

I also want to mention that if it's a gas powered trimmer they can be a pain starting because they're not used often enough. Maybe look into getting one with a rechargeable battery, but again I wouldn't get it from a big box store. You'll pay a bit more at an independent dealer but their help and service is probably worth it in your situation.

I hope this works out for you, Colleen... and I really hope you weren't ripped off... you've had enough to deal with without having to go after cheaters to get money back on anything! Our Ryobi trimmer lasted exactly 18 months... replaced it with a Black & Decker and it's still working great after years.

Do you any guy friends who could show the right way to use the weed wacker?

If it's hard to start you might have to 'prime it'.
And guys can show you how to do it.

Lot's of luck.

O, did your husband wear a clear face shield?
Bits of grass & weeds seem to fly up & stick to whatever you are wearing.

I agree to the wearing a face mask part
Weed wackers can cause stones to come flying at you at horrendous speeds
I've stopped using weed killer during bee season and then only sparingly.
I didn’t even thing of the bees
We never use chemical weed killers
Then again, we have a lot of weeds. Lol

I recently had a bad experience with Ryobi. I’d always considered Ryobi to be a good company and have quite a few of their battery operated tools. But my recent experience with trying to make the warranty good on a tool has left me disillusioned.
I bought a reciprocating saw limb pruner that worked for about 3 hours and quit.
Customer service said the tool was eligible for their rapid repair program but first I needed to go online and register the tool.
But — they make it impossible to register a tool on line . When you click on the link you get an error/ page not found message. Upon investigating, this was not a new problem with Ryobi but had been going on for months. The customer service rep told me ā€œ it’s just temporary. The site will be fixed by tomorrow ā€œ. Not true!

After about 4 calls of getting the run around I’ve given up. The only good part is that at least I have another good battery and charger that will work with the tools I already have.

Colleen, I understand your frustration.

I love mine too
It's 2 cycle gas
and has a saw blade attachment for unwanted seedlings and brush
The new one I bought after buying this house is electric, because I have a couple of outlets outside and the yard isn't real big, it's mid-sized residential. So it might not have as much torque as a gas fueled one, but the blade works just fine even for pruning the orange tree, so it's adequate.
