I think what America lacks today is a sense of honor.

Vintage, I don’t think most wealthy people have ever really cared about the poor, elderly and disabled people. With social media it’s just more obvious . I do worry about social issues and definitely people born into wealth have an advantage over the rest of us.
My wealthy neighbor would hold court and explain just how things were especially after a bridge and martini lunch. She told me which colleges were acceptable and none were any I could dream of attending. She said a girl should become engaged at the end of her junior year. Forget getting a degree. No one wants to marry a woman who is smarter than the guy. Her daughter, my friend, did just that. My path was a lot messier and I married at 28.

I think what America lacks today is a political and judicial system that actually works and government leaders that take their role seriously. Wishful thinking.

The neighbor sounds like an entitled jerk! Plus she did women a disservice by not emphasizing finishing college is important.

I think America has many honorable , decent and kind people. But we have this sense of despair and that things are really bad. When in reality we have a very high standard of living compared to much of the world. We can speak to strangers in mediums like this. We have choices and foods many people have no access to. But we have a divided society because so many politicians gain or keep power using divisive words to make us believe that our enemies are fellow American. It really saddens me that we can be so easily manipulated by cruel and angry words.

I think the best thing we can do as individuals is continue to communicate with other people and vote for men and women that do not try to divide us and demonstrate unkind behaviors. Who are not in politics for personal gain but to help their fellow man. I know much of this sounds cliche but we are better than this. Love is the answer. Giving back is the answer. Recognizing that we are all human and need to help when we can. I taught for many years and saw so many great kids go on to good lives. THat is my hope. The youth today will find a way to bring back unity and compassion along with sanity in American policy and decisions.

Hello, stephenPE. I'm Canadian, and Canada to some extent faces some similar social (and other) challenges to those of the U.S. I like your attitude. I've been involved, in various ways, with environmental work since the 1980s, sometimes as a volunteer, sometimes in connection with one of my jobs.

Mainly what we as citizens can do is to try our best. Yes, communicate with people, give help when we can. Sure, supporting good political reps is one thing. But "giving back," as you say. For some people that can include volunteer time, whether social, environmental, educational, whatever.

I am in my 70's and over my life I have traveled all over the world, met many people and enjoyed most all of it. If I look for faults and things that are bad, I can find them most everywhere I look. If I look for strengths and for things that are good, I can find those also.

I choose to look for the good and I focus on those things. Sometimes bad stuff happens, but I move beyond those things/ times getting back to happiness as soon as possible. I find honor and honorable things throughout my life, but you have to look for them...

I just call it LIFE...

I recently had surgery. Since then my life has completely changed in many ways. Before my surgery my attitude was exactly like your. I need to get back to that mindset. It is all a matter of what you are looking for. I used to see the good everywhere. Not Im either not looking or forgot how. Im gonna try to remember your words..........

It's important, when traveling, to avoid the "it's better where I'm from" mentality, and to simply note the differences between cultures. I think it's a mistake to constantly compare your birth place to where you're at, they're two separate things. This likely informs your own view.

I absolutely LOVE being a foreigner in a foreign land. That feeling of "otherness", that strange sense of being part, but apart. It's exciting, energizing.
