I told many of you before that my neighbor a few doors up the street knows that I am a retired State cop. So, again, my doorbell rings at 12:30 this morning. I knew my wife wasn’t going to answer it, so I got up and went to the door. There stands the neighbor all excited telling me his son is going nuts on some kind of drug. The kid was in rehab 3 times and had been clean for at least the last 3 years.
On Saturday night, he went to a party and someone gave him a pill “just to try.” He liked it, so he bought a couple. Last night, he took 2 and started acting weird. The neighbor said the next thing he knew, his son was throwing stuff at him. He didn’t know whether to call the ambulance, police or come and get me. He decided to try me first.
I grabbed a couple of packets of Naloxone (Narcan) and gave him 2 about 5 minutes apart. That quieted him down. I saw the ambulance at his door about an hour ago, so I called the dad to find out if everything was OK. The dad told me his son isn’t very coherent, so they want him taken to the hospital to get checked. I did see they had oxygen going up his nose or what’s called a nasal cannula. I thought giving him oxygen was a good idea. I wanted to ask his dad if he told the EMT’s the whole story of what went on last night. They should have been made aware of that.
I also told his dad that he needs to keep some Naloxone on hand. I suggested the nasal spray, but the sublingual strips work just as well, if you can find them. But seriously, I was glad to help.
