I was just diagnosed with peripheral neuralgia?

The Doc is treating me for peripheral neuralgia with Carbamazepin Chewable Tablets. My dentist friend said he used it a lot for facial neuralgia and it worked real good for his patients. I started 24 hours ago, and already I can sleep because I feel less pain. That is wonderful. I am wondering how long I should take this med. I might have to wait for a couple months before I can see a specialist about what is causing this illness. Has anyone used this medication?

I have periphral neuropathy, haven't used Carbamazepin, but am interested in some relief from nerve pain. I wish you success in treating your
peripheral neuralgia.

I just looked and that is the correct diagnosis. It is neuropathy not neuralgia. :) Do you take meds to help ease the pain. I am a little concerned about side effects especially if I have to be on something for months.

Is this med okay to take with the other one, you are already taking?
@Paco Dennis
Or would they possibly phase one out, while phasing this one in???

I also wonder which type of doctor gave you this dx.
I am glad you are having some relief!

Yes, there are some cotraindications with a couple meds I am on. We called the pharmisicist to go over them, and he said at the low mg level it won't effect them. My Main Doc prescribed them. I have been seeing him for 16 years. Thank you!

My peripheral neuropathy is mostly in my feet, a superficial numbness that's crept up and sometimes reaches partially to my hip. I know a lot of PN patients experience horrible stabbing "electrical" pains, I only get those occasionally and for not very long. My doctor did prescribe Gabapentin, but he misunderstood(didn't listen) my description of symptoms, he assumed my primary complaint was pain, but I was looking for a treatment for the numbness. After 11 years of searching, I know there is no cure for the numbness. A forum for peripheral neuropathy: neurotalk.org/peripheral-neuropathy

The numbness is here to stay, I'm afraid.

What I can't figure out is why I have both the numbness and the shooting pain in my toes that feels like someone is jabbing me with a live electric wire. I guess the numbness is "surface" and the pains are "deep".

Gabapentin has helped a bit with the pains, though.
