I went Shopping at 6.30AM to Test the "For Over 70s" Hour

...this is the face of the result of panic buying... I could cry for the elderly and disabled who don't have anyone who can drive around a 50 mile radius trying to track down food and supplies..

...and then all over the news today was this very emotional NHS critical care nurse , who was exhausted and very emotional after finishing a 48 hour shift.. and was in tears because she just can't find any fresh food ...

someone rang into the breakfast news show this morning, and said they'd tried to place their usual weekly delivery order and were given a date 5 weeks hence?.. Dear God how can that be? The supermarkets are telling us that they have all the stock, and that people shouldn''t panic buy that's why shelves are empty because they can't fill them fast enough ... well if that's the case why don't they have the stock for deliveries?
hollydolly, the second wave of panic buying was caused
by a supermarket boss who said that the supply chain was
stretched to the limit and nearly ready to collapse!

So the ones who filled their house with food are now stocking
up the shed/garage.

Mike.

I think half the population of the uk live in 2 or 3 bed flats Mike.... no garage, no garden shed, no basement and no attics....so where the heck are they stocking all this stuff? :(

i think they are simply getting a much greater volume of orders.
with reduced public transport everywhere from next week it will not be easy in some areas for pensioners to get to the shops.

Part of it could be the problem is with the people who do the deliveries. They may have a shortage of people willing to get out there and make those deliveries. ???
My son drives a truck for a large food chain, he has been working 12 hour days as they have 14 stores and 74 trailers ready for delivery!! They only have 10 drivers!!

One of the problems in Australia was the "no truck deliveries" during the night hours, so that they didn't disturb the people in residential streets.

That rule has now been taken off the statutes and trucks can deliver 24 hours a day.

Should help to alleviate some of the problems.

Our drivers are delivering all night every night..... except Sunday nights

Did y'all see that some states were CLOSING rest areas??? That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Truckers need a place to stop and rest, use the bathroom, etc. and are mandated by law to stop after so many hours. So in this time when the need for them is greatest, once again politicians do the dumbest thing.

These drivers are breaking all the rules to get the job done. As a driver from years ago, we will owe these people a debt we will never be able to repay. Along with the people at the cash and more then I can list here.

Ruthanne - I just learned that Ohio does not have a law against price gouging - supposedly because "We believe in free enterprise." Sheesh! They are supposedly going to try and get one enacted next week.
@Empty Well, I know the stores that charge more and don't think they are really gauging as compared to what people are doing on Amazon now:rolleyes::oops:..but anyhow, I go to the lower priced stores for most things. There are a couple or more in the area thankfully ;)

It would be good if they get that bill enacted, too(y):sneaky:🌷⚡

I think that it is the right thing to do C'est Moi, all supermarket
deliveries come from fairly local warehouses and the driver can
rest at the end of the runs both ways.
Imagine a driver getting held up or worse for a truck load of eggs
or bread.

All the rules have been scrapped and left to the driver to determine
if he is still safe to drive, at least in most countries around the World.
I don't know about North America, or if the states there are acting
like separate countries, if they are then that will cause confusion.

Mike.

My oldest son is on his 6th night stocking the shelves at Loblaws. I imagine he is replacing those that don't want to come in or are they sick? God...I hope not. I have another son in daytime produce at another store but his work hours haven't been increased. They are limiting the number of some items in the store, like tp and paper towels. There are warehouses not to far away.

I haven't checked on the early hour for just seniors.

I do have supper about 5 p.m. and go to bed about 9:30 (read for half hour); I am up about 5-5:30 but I am a morning person; always have been, always will be.

Very few people at 7 am. Not only seniors were there.
The store people breaking all sorts of records restocking the shelves.
Not anywhere nearly enough staff to stock shelves in our supermarkets, a casualty of so many self checkouts now, and not so many staff employed in the supermarkets as there once was who could be used as shelf fillers during this emergency ... however, the good news is that one of our major Supermarkets is to employ 20,000 staff on a 12 week contract as shelf fillers... great news for the shopper, and even better news for the unemployed or those who have recently lost their jobs due to this pandemic... especially zero contract hour workers.

I am conncerned tho' about those who have no choice but to work with the vast swathes of the public... supermarket staff, are often overlooked in this manner, where Police, teachers, doctors and nurses are remembered,,, the shop staff are there working under enormous pressure, and at risk to their health and are forgotten . Hats off to every last one of them..

I have little experience with Amazon and haven't checked anything out there in a long, long time. Now, you peeked my curiosity! I do most of my shopping at Goodwill - but, it's not the place for finding food or toilet paper! I did go out yesterday to find my birds' sprouting seed mix and bulk feed. No price gouging at the health food store nor the pet store (-: I was pleasantly surprised.

This is heartbreaking - and important! If people continue to behave irresponsibly, we will all see stricter controls and restrictions placed on us by authorities. If we can't control ourselves, others will do it for us! Grow up - Play fair!

Wow! At least you were able to get most of what you needed and that's a good thing. Another good thing was that you wound up getting in the store and out a lot sooner than you thought you would.

Sorry, but I disagree. There are plenty of OTR (over the road) truckers traveling hundreds of miles a day and they need to keep the rest areas OPEN. (This does not apply to local area drivers who don't need rest areas since they sleep in their own beds at night.) Many stores won't even allow truckers to park on their lot unless they are making deliveries. Truck drivers need a safe place to park, and the rest areas provide that.
