Re: light or dark background etc, where is this option located at?

Hiya EM :)

The forum "Style Chooser" is at the very bottom of this page on the far left side of the blue bar.
I'm sure you have the "Default Style" selected, but if you click on "Default Style" you will find "Shades of Grey" available.
"Shades of Grey" is the dark forum theme style.

I don't have a specific laptop recommendation. Both my laptops are old and slow and seldom used.

You mentioned you'd previously always purchased from Best Buy and I don't think that is necessarily a bad choice.
Unless of course you've had a negative experience there or something.

I feel the promise of local support and customer service at Best Buy would be better for you than you'd find at Walmart or Amazon.
Looking at this Best Buy link ... Best Buy Support ... I see several things that might help you out.
- Shopping and Product Advice. Shop with an expert.
- Price match guarantee
- Trade in your device

Better idea is just go for a "look see" at your local Best Buy and talk with someone in person about your laptop requirements.
I think you'd get better product advice from Best Buy, who deal strictly with electronics, than perhaps Walmart for example.
And if you want a second opinion ... go back at a different time and day to perhaps speak with someone different.
If you had any issues or problems, your local Best Buy should be "all over it" to help and make it right, I'd think.

Good Luck EM !!! :)

It's not so much the brand but what's inside, the processor, memory and hard drive are something to consider. I would recommend at least an i5 processor and 16 GB of memory if you want Windows. Think about what you will be connecting, and make sure the laptop has the ports you need. Screen size and quality are important. Stear clear of Celeron processors and don't go with a completely unknown brand. HP, Dell, Asus, Toshiba and Samsung all make decent midrange laptops. You can look for features like a numeric keypad and backlight keyboard if those are features that are important to you. Check the manufacturers website for daily deals. Avoid buying from Walmart or one of the big box stores. They are generally overpriced and not the best quality.

More helpful informative things for me to consider, and thank you @ s 76I42.

My only laptop has been a refurbished Lenovo T520 Thinkpad with SSD that I got from Ebay 4 years ago for $117.
I used it for some trips and continued to use it at home for awhile, but then went back to using my desktop computer.

My preference is using a desktop computer. I updated last fall with one of my other cases, a new motherboard, CPU, memory, SSD, and power supply. The latter since my previous power supply was a couple of decades old but still working fine. Now I have two desktop computers, both of them working quite well. My 15 year old 19" monitor finally failed, so I got a new 27" monitor from Costco. I'm still using a keyboard from the 1990's. I was going to get a new one but the new ones are weird, made for gaming but not typing.

Linux Mint Xfce is on all three computers.

I had a HP Widows 7 computer for 8 yrs, hated the updates which took forever to upload. I did some research decided on a HP Chrome laptop bought at Best buy{have acct} It took me a few days to adjust from a 20 inch to 14 inch. I used it alot
Last yr, went back to Best Buy because laptop had 'died' bought a updated, newer version which I'm very pleased with I don't miss Windows at all

@ John Cycling, thank you very much :)

I have an HP Windows 7 that updated to Windows 10. I hate the Windows updates but other than that it has been a great laptop. I have had it for 12 years and just now am noticing the battery is not charging all the way, so may need a new battery. I'll bet the new one won't last 12 years.

Never owned a laptop. Used them only a few times, but prefer a desktop.

I have a 27" monitor (biggest that will fit in the hutch on the desk.) My printer and scanner are always plugged in.

There is a tablet by my recliner in the living room if I want to look up something simple.
