If The United States is "United''Then Why

...Do you have Different License Plates for Different States?

Just wondering... anyone know ? wouldn't it be easier just to have ''united States'' on the plates ?
Let's try again. The licensing authority for vehicles lies with the states, not the federal government.

ADDED: We also have a large country, with 50 states. From looking at a license plate, you can at least tell where it was registered.

People need to read the Constitution at least once a year so as to remember what the United States of America is about. I am shocked at how ignorant many people are. And how cleverly extremists take advantage of that ignorance to fool and control other people.

Perhaps we should make Constitution Day a national holiday. People are ignorant. How many people know that the Constitution bans Bills of Attainder. Who even knows that that is? One point if you know. The same goes with Ex-Post Facto laws which are banned. Two points if you know what an ex-post facto law is. What is the President’s role in amending the Constitution? Three points if you know. How about the states? Two points for that.

Laugh if you wish, but remember that when our leaders and military personnel take their oath they swear to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution. There is no oath of allegiance to royalty, god, some dictator, the latest strongman, a military officer, the President, etc. Nobody in the country has to bend the knee to any individual.

Many of them identify as "African American", "Italian American", etc. They state their ethnicity first, and American second. But of course, they are joined as a nation.
I know the terms above bother some people, but the order of things like German American is based on the structure of our English language, not where our loyalties are. I am a short man. Sandra is a tall woman. Joe is a lousy doctor. My daughter is a young American. The adjective describes the following noun. It’s the noun that carries the most weight and power. So I don’t worry about it.

However, today there are those who think the adjective means more than the noun. Those people tend to be ignorant at best and hostile towards others at worst.

It certainly doesn't bother me. We have the thing in the UK where some people use "British", while others will say "English", "Welsh", "Scottish", etc. Our Passports are British. People draw lines wherever they want, and it's all good. I just recall what when I was in the US, I don't remember anyone simply saying, "I'm American". But it's a big country..........

From the Declaration of Independence, even before the Constitution.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the World for the Rectitude of our Intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly Publish and Declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be, Free and Independent States...

that's what I thought... United... whereas ..in the EU..if someone attacked Ukraine for example ..most other EU countries would shrug, and get on with their day
Ukraine, at present, is not a member of the E.U. They applied for membership after being attacked and are at present only a candidate for admission. This process can take years.

From Hendrick v. Maryland, U.S. Supreme Court.

In the absence of national legislation covering the subject, a state may rightfully prescribe uniform regulations necessary for public safety and order in respect to the operation upon its highways of all motor vehicles -- those moving in interstate commerce as well as others. And, to this end, it may require the registration of such vehicles and the licensing of their drivers, charging therefor reasonable fees graduated according to the horsepower of the engines -- a practical measure of size, speed, and difficulty of control. This is but an exercise of the police power uniformly recognized as belonging to the states and essential to the preservation of the health, safety, and comfort of their citizens...

Before being admitted to the Union, each State was required to have its own Constitution, therefore, as Hearlady said, each is a Separate and Independent Sovereign.

America has had many changes from a British colonial system to a Republic, though many may call it a democracy. Each state has it's own license plates. We all hope the idiots stay in their home state and we will stay in ours! ;)

And to make things more interesting in many states there are sovereign Indian nations.
......and then you have the garden variety "sovereign citizen" cuckoos, who insist that they don't need license plates, or drivers' licenses or auto insurance or car registration. It just doesn't apply to THEM, y'know, because they are not bound by the laws of the United States.

When told that they do INDEED need the above, their defense is that they aren't "driving" per se, they're "traveling" and "traveling" is guaranteed to them by the Constitution (which is funny, as they don't recognize the Constitution).

You really tend to wonder if they actually believe that, or being just a jerk. Probably both.

I think the reason they have different license plates is for identification purposes. For example if a child is kidnapped in New York and the car appears in Kansas it is more identifiable by law enforcement. Also various professions have specific license plates they have to sport on their vehicles like the feds and stuff.

If we all had one universal plate it would be more difficult to identify where the vehicle is from I think. Plus it may have to do with insurance and taxes and stuff. Pricing is different in each state I believe.

..but we all have the same licence plates..obviously different numbers and they are all stored in a central database, so easily identified by the police if necessary

But the U.S. is very big — five time zones, plus hawaii.
Time Zone Map

When people cross state lines, their vehicle license plates identify in which state they were registered, not just "in the United States" (some 330,000 people, plus the illegal "immigrants"). Among other things, that means police can just look at the license plate without having to query a database for every vehicle they see. Yes?

I'm sure identification is quicker with it divided up than trying to search one data base for the proverbial needle in a haystack.
