If you own a dishwasher do you use it?

When the kids were growing up I ran the DW at least daily, oftener on weekends. Now I only bother with it if one of us is sick (sanitize cycle), or if more than just the two of us are eating. Otherwise it's not worth the aggravation. Rarely put in pots or pans.

Wouldn't dream of putting painted serving pieces, fine crystal or silver in it. Inexpensive wine glasses and everyday flatware? Sure. But the good stuff? Nope.
I have one set of Art Deco wine glasses in pristine condition. They get hand washed. So do all kitchen and steak knives and cast iron without enamel. The rest goes for a ride. Scrape, load, done. Stove parts and vent screens take a bit of arranging. LeCreuset does well so do certain non stick pans.

Dinner for two: 4 glasses, cutlery, four plates, two bowls. Breakfast for SO: plate, bowl, cutlery, glass, cup. No!

If we do build again - a water line for a real professional dish washer!

We must have a good brand also cause ours works well. We do a load of dishes everyday.
Something we do often is rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. We find that dirty dishes are easy to rinse when done before food gets dried out. If we don’t rinse them first, the dishwasher has a hard time keeping them clean. The food stuff used to dry out on the dishes and was then hard to clean.
Same with us we rinse off any food left on what needs to be washed. We cook daily so except for pots & pans the dishwasher is full & used daily.

I don't know how old our dishwasher is but it must be pretty old because recently I had a DIY project relative to the bottom spray bar. It was popping out, my fix is working & will continue to work.

I was surprised to find out one daughter in law had no clue the her dish washer was not a food disposal unit. I found this out when she took the dinner plates straight from the dinner table & put them in her dishwasher. Being a nosey father in law I looked inside & saw a collection of food scraps on the filter. I asked her if she knew the food scraps were there. Her answer was yes & when the screen was covered she would have my son clean it. I talked to both of them about why I thought rinsing should be done. They accepted the logic & no longer skip rinsing.

We do use the dishwasher, probably have enough to run it every 3rd day. Everything gets pre-washed, which according to Consumer Reports is unnecessary.
Leave some oatmeal or other starchy product harden onto your dishes and see what happens!

We use the 1 hour cycle which works fine as long as there is not hardened food. We prewash too.

There are 3 of us, but even if I lived alone I would use a dishwasher. Besides washing, it provides a drying space that is out of sight as to opposed to drying mats and racks all over the place.

We don't have one. Here's the main reason. When you've bought mechanical and/or electronic equipment, you find said equipment can break down. And eventually will, to a lesser or greater extent. And never at a convenient time. We already have a dryer and a very good clothes-washer in our basement. BTW, we've replaced the water heater they sit next to twice.

About 15 years ago, the oven element in our electric stove deteriorated—as in kaput. We hired a repairman with his own stock of the proper element and many years' experience, but had to wait for him to have an open day to get to our job (which entailed him driving 80 minutes each way). That new element lasted about 10 years, and when that one gave out, I'd absorbed enough know-how to replace it myself. But that's just one example about owning equipment.

Accepting this reality reminds me I don't mind washing dishes so much anyway.🤔

We had a combination eons ago. Everything but bones. Dirty screens are a no.

When we did use the dishwasher, I would vigorously scour and rinse each plate and all of the cutlery before putting it in the dishwasher....my OCD in full flight!

When I used my dishwasher I never prewashed my dishes.
I have never understood why people do that. Thats the dishwashers job.
Mine does fine without it. Except for cooked on pots and casseroles and those do need to be soaked and hand washed.

A friend who lives alone uses hers as a dish drying rack, meaning she hand washes her dishes throughout the day, lets them dry overnight in the DW, then empties it in the morning. She doesn't mind washing dishes, it's the drying she doesn't care for.

I have to admit though, there is something soothing about that late-night whirring of a dishwasher. It's one of my favorite sounds.
It sounds almost exactly like the ocean!

I fill ours gradually, throughout the day, then after dinner I open the door and put our plates on it for the dog to lick -- shut up, it's the highlight of her day -- then I run it for three hours with scalding water. I unload it every morning while the coffee drips.

You may want to try different cleaning tabs. I am not a brand hog but when it comes to dishwasher detergent I use the pricy one that works.
