If you own a dishwasher do you use it?

You may want to try different cleaning tabs. I am not a brand hog but when it comes to dishwasher detergent I use the pricy one that works.
You are probably right, but we would have to also use the regular long cycle rather than the quick wash. The 1 hour quick wash will wash dishes that are not pre washed provided they do not have dried on food. But another reason to prewash is that we do not have a garbage disposal. Mostly, we just pre-rinse. Love the dishwasher we have now.

What has helped is installing a hard water filter ahead of the hot water supply.

Don't have one and wouldn't want one. Don't mind washing my few and smaller dishes, my coffee cup and drip coffee pot and basket and the occasional small pot or skillet by hand. The dish water feels great in winter! Only problem is that I have to buy rubber gloves over and over. No matter what brand or how thick or what they are made of, some of them stretch and all of them get holes. I guess I'll just have to accept that they are a consumable and, therefore, must be replaced eternally.

I've been using the dishwasher here for 12 years. When I first moved here the old dishwasher started leaking and so maintenance looked at it and said it needed replacing. So I got a new one 12 years ago. This past autumn the dishwasher started leaking and wouldn't drain fully. Maintenance came and cleaned the filter or whatever the thing in the bottom is. They unclogged it. It's working well again now.

I use it about every 3 or 4 days. I also clean fry pans, etc. in the sink by hand even though I will sometimes put a pot or pan in the dishwasher. Everything comes out sparkling clean.

I went for about 3 months without using the dishwasher because I hadn't called maintenance till months after it wasn't working properly. So I hand washed everything. I didn't mind but am glad the dishwasher is working well again.

I know people who have full sized dishwashers that they don't use. I don't understand that. Since I hate washing and drying dishes, I bought a countertop one (actually have had three). We still wind up damn near washing the dishes and it can be tricky to load sometimes, but major benefits of using the machine is that I know the dishes have been sanitized and I don't have to dry them.

A friend who lives alone uses hers as a dish drying rack, meaning she hand washes her dishes throughout the day, lets them dry overnight in the DW, then empties it in the morning. She doesn't mind washing dishes, it's the drying she doesn't care for.

I use mine as a drying rack too, but I leave them in there since those are the dishes I use all the time.
Putting them back in the cupboard seems like extra work. :D
Also, cupboard space here is limited. So basically, I'm using mine as extra cupboard space. :D

A little tip for the users who still have small ones that like to be independent and make their own snacks.
Open the dishwasher and have them use the door as their counter instead of the higher kitchen counter.
Allows them to be independent and spillage is inside the dishwasher. Makes for easy cleanup. :D
Its been a while but BTDT.

I stay at my farm the majority of time. It's sixty plus miles home where the wife stays. I wash dishes by hand and then run them through the dishwasher. Dishwashers at both places and they both run everyday. GE has been good in the past but replaced last one with a Bosch here. They are quirky yet reliable. I use dishwasher machine cleaner as well as lemon juice/baking soda plus regularly clean the filter. FYI if you don't clean them and do maintenance then don't use them. They can be sanitizers or scum buckets.
