If you thought legalizing pot would cut down on crime and bring in revenue, think again.

My thoughts on legalizing cannabis: Stopping the madness and hypocrisy, a small part of the Dark Ages is finally past.
The State makes money from cannabis sales, although the local sheriff's dept.is busting the illegal grow operations. That keeps the "law & order" fanatics happy.

I think that legalizing Marijuana just creates more addicts. Sure, it might bring in some revenue, but the Mexican drug cartels can easily undercut any prices for "legal" drugs, and still make a huge profit. Ultimately, it will only lead to more crime, etc., as many of those using this junk try to finance their habits.

I don't think it will create more addicts - the ones that currently use it will use it a bit more knowing there are no legal consequences. So they think...

The video explained that the cost of finding, investigating and busting the illegal grow operations costs far more than the sales and taxes brings in because the cartel operations immediately branched out to include human trafficking, major theft (i.e., stealing tons and tons of water, cars, equipment, etc), and money laundering. The state doesn't have the resources to deal with all that crap.

You should watch the video. It's a good one, and it's totally non-political.

Choice : Illegal Mafia or Legal Mafia? No one is able to quit serving the the most dangerous of all addictions. Money. Next time you get a nice windfall, be aware of how good it makes you feel. Let's make money illegal!

Don't you prefer a legal mafia? After all, it's what we're used to. I mean if anybody's going to be stealing thousands of tons of water from a So.Calif reservoir, it better be the Dept of Agriculture!

I haven't noticed any raise in crime here, and please, pot is not addicting. I have a close friend who used it daily for at least 30 years and one day she just quit it. She hasn't used now for about 2 years. It can be very helpful in many situations. Personally I use a mix of THC and CBD (not a large amount of THC) and it helps me get to sleep on nights when I have a problem. I am not addicted either. I am very glad it is legal here in Canada. If it were addictive the Canadian government would never have made it legal.

I don't think anyone would argue the benefits.

An aside: Are cigarettes and booze illegal in Canada?

I don't like either, and they don't like each other. It is a battle against the haves and have nots, and at the rate that gap is widening, the increase in violence and crime ( including armed conflict...gun violence ) will increase. Of course, in my IM (not so)HO.

People have tried throughout time immemorial to get other people to stop doing what they wanted to do. If enough want something eventually it happens, despite the opposition of the outraged.

The part-time sellers that used to deal for friends and family will go away quietly.

The hardcore criminals will use their talents and distribution networks to continue dealing in something illegal.

IMO the legalization should have been handled through pharmacies and not in boutique-style shops that trivialize the use of marijuana.

The problem (that the video addresses) isn't about opposition to legalizing weed, though. It's about a foreign drug cartel stepping in to take advantage when the state stopped trying to stop people from doing what they want to do.

First, marijuana use anywhere in the USA is still illegal. That statute is still on the Federal books. Smoking pot may not get you a cell in your local jail, but US Leavenworth Pen. is more than willing. to dash your high hopes. That discrepancy about marijuana laws allows cartels to move in. Maybe I'm naive, but when was the last time you heard of a cartel muscling in on Budweiser beer, or a drive by on the makers of Tylenol.

The medical dispensaries here don't take selling it lightly and dispense in very small quantities that cost a whole lot. I believe also you are only allowed a certain amount for a certain time period so it is not unlike a pharmacy. I have no idea what boutique-like shops do, though. We don't have them here in my state yet.

Maybe I am naive, but the reason is they are legal. Both can be hazardous to your health.
