And if you aren't retired, do you want to keep working for a way lot longer?
At first glance I thought this was a humorous question but upon reflection I realized that life is completely different for people. I suppose some folks identify with their jobs and without that connection they lose their "identity".

Life is a series of choices (or options). If your "work" is preferable to your homelife (in whatever form) I suppose that staying employed is your better choice. If the thought of diminished wealth and importance eats at you, same thing. Upon reflection, I guess there are many reasons but, for me, when the opportunity arose, back in 1992, I jumped at it without a second thought and with my wife's blessings.

These past 31 years have probably been the happiest of our lives. We've traveled and been surrounded by kids, grands' and great grands. We've been lucky and blessed. Sadly life doesn't treat us all in this manner and for those in tougher circumstances I have great sympathy and realize that the subject choice will vary from person to person.

I'm tempted all the time to jack in this retirement business and get back to work. If not for a long commute (I'd be in for a 120 minute per day into the center of London) I'd probably do it. It's the idea of commuting that kills me. The work? Nah, I'd be fine with that.
Commute? No problem. :)

I LOVE being retired. No two days are alike and I enjoy every minute of every day. So, no, I would not like to go back to work. This is such a wonderful time in my life.

I retired 11 years ago and after 8 months was asked to teach an online college class in my two areas of expertise. That was something I had never done hence my username.

Also during that time I consulted in my previous occupation. I had a 3 year break and a year ago I went back to consulting. I make my own appointments to see clients and am dependent on referrals so I don’t work on any type of schedule. I would never stop unless my mind goes.

If you're retired, would you like to go back to work?

I've mentioned this on another thread, but yes, I'd go back to work, definitely, even a 7 day week, as long as it was a 1 hour working day with a 55minute tea-break. 😊

Work for many, is simply a means to an end. It's the money they earn that keeps them there. Others are fortunate in that they enjoy their work so much so that they would rather shun retirement. My wife's working life was spent in the ambulance service, being a paramedic is stimulating, demanding, occasionally dangerous but never boring. Retirement for her came as a blessing, I treated her to a design built cabin where she can indulge herself in her passion for dressmaking. It got dubbed her she-shed.

I should shut up though, how I have enjoyed the lady's retirement. She has made me a huge collection of Hawaiian style Aloha shirts, I have a collection of baggy style trousers, I have spearpoint collared shirts and so much more. The lady certainly enjoys life in retirement.

Retirement I find difficult, that's because work was stimulating and was no more than a ten minute drive away, I often walked. Work filled my day and even though I have hobbies they simply cannot compare to the motivation that I had when working.

Re-reading this post I realised that I have overlooked one of the basic fundamentals of why people work in old age, for the wage, of course. Mercifully my wife and I are secure, that makes going to work a choice, not a necessity. How I would loathe to be in that situation.

I also did go back to work after retirement for a while but after that I've enjoyed my retirement years...now...there is no energy for working at a job.

If you're retired, would you like to go back to work?

Thought about it once

Then

I laughed and laughed
My thoughts exactly.
I’m still laughing about it

Note: I considered making some things for our Etsy store but I much prefer making stuff for family & friends now. The thought of others hanging up Christmas decorations after I’m gone, gives me such peace & gratitude.

NO,I took early retirement in 2011, my job was stressful as part time pharmacy tech in a local hosptial I delivered narcotics to nursing floors, speciality units e.g ER,MICU ,CCU
There was alot of walking/bending/counting{math is not my strong suit} dealing with rude doctors, some nurses
I was there 27 yrs, surprised I lasted that long

We’re both still working. I doubt either of us will ever fully retire. We’re both self employed, so we set our own hours and work only with clients we choose to.

We’ve both geared down some, don’t pound quite as hard, but even so…I typically work 4 days a week, for varying amounts of time each day, sometimes a full day, sometimes just a morning or afternoon. Ron will work full days for a period of time, till that project is done, then will take several days or a week or two off before he takes on the next one.

The way we’ve crafted our jobs is very workable for each of us and allows us to schedule our time the way we want to.

"What are you doing with yourself?" my former employer asked when I met him a few weeks ago. My wife and I were enjoying coffee at a delightful country inn, when he and his family came in. "He's bored," my wife said, smiling at me. "Come in on Monday and talk to me." He replied.
Now I am back, I will know when I am ready to retire. How I missed the cut and thrust of work, and a benefit my doctor pointed out is that a mentally stimulating job lowers the risk of dementia in old age. See here.
