Illinois Has An Assault Weapons Ban, Makes Me Think About Moving to Illinois!

How many people here actually know the difference between an actual AR 15 (American Rifle Co. model # 15) and a real assault rifle?
Not me, I have a lot of guns but never purchased anything automatic or simi-automatic. Bolt or pump action is good enough for my needs.

I did once have a semi-automatic 32 Beretta, my father brought it back from his service time in Europe. Would make a poor "assault" weapon.

Not all scary black rifles have a shoulder thing that goes up
Sadly this bolt action .30-06 was lost in a most unfortunate boating accident

... along with several others including the Russian made bolt action Mosin-Nagant M91 in 7.62 and bayonet "assault rifle"

How many people here actually know the difference between an actual AR 15 (American Rifle Co. model # 15) and a real assault rifle? The former is a break-down rifle made for pack trips into the mountains for hunting. Or did you just take someone's word they were both the same? How many have never had any gun nor wanted one is just so skeeved at the idea that you don't bother to find out? Yet you vote?
I believe you're thinking of the AR-7, which in fact breaks down and fits in a back pack well, used to have one. It is semi-auto, chambered in .22 Long Rifle, not .223. The AR-15:
The AR-15 is basically the civilian counterpart to the M16. The AR-15 came first, in 1947; the M16 a decade later. They have the same magazine capacity: 30 rounds. The former is heavier, with a shorter range and slower rate of fire, but these are subtle differences. More here.

Illinois is also a no cash bail state. Recently a gentleman was in jail on a murder charge with a bail of 1.7 million which was reduced to 250K. He made bail. He then killed another man and wounded another. State AG's do not care about your safety. The AG in this state has one goal. Higher Office. Police are hamstrung. And every new gun law is a stepping stone to removing weapons from law abiding citizens. That's the goal and if you think otherwise you live under a rock.

OK here I would not live in a state like Illinois with that law I led a crime free life to own and compete in matches, In the last 90 days I have gone through 2 - 6 agency background checks both 100% clear (now you know more about me than I do you), matches are a part of my life here I passed on going today due to friends did not wish to go early to beat the heat here we are having, Texas summers get hot here, But I could have and would have taken 2 of those scary black rifles.

I can't even remember how many background checks I have had nor the hours of class training I have had from the last 40 plus years, I very much resent anyone that tries to remove this part of my life totally, our church even has shooting matches and an indoor range, we do not just stand and shoot targets much movement far from it. Our matches are designed from actual police reports as real as safety allows, sure no stand and shoot bullseyes, we have had over 1000 people so far go through our church safety classes now there is a 750 member cap with about a 3 year waiting period to be approved.

No negative anything and your out just one! You are even responsible for guests you bring along, a guest of a member about 9-10 years back made a remark that resulted in the removal of a member's family and guest from our property just a anti gun remark was all said I shoot weekly and have for many years it is a huge part of my life and as stated I resent deeply those who wish to stop it. In the off weeks we have 1st aid classes from paramedic and doctor members at no charge for anyone topics are from member suggestions.

I was checked backgrounds from FBI, ATF, CITY, STATE, MILITARY and my doctors that's the same for all members not for everyone but my life here. So very pro gun here person.
Next Sat is our church sponsored pistol match I will attend. We even have lo light night matches both indoor and outside only those who shoot regular with us and known safe are invited.
How do you feel about persons that have done virtually none of the background checks and training abusing 2A to commit mass murders such as El Paso and Uvalde and countless others?

Is your right to own an AR style weapon superior to others right to live?

Are these needless deaths just the price that society has to pay so some can enjoy a hobby?

Almost every mass shooter gave multiple warning signs and were known by Police or FBI.
Why the uptick in mass shootings? Kids used to bring their hunting rifles to school so they could shoot or hunt after school. ( I have been told) They never killed anyone. Why now?
That's the million dollar question no one wants to try and answer. Too much work.

That may well be true, however I am not sure how practical it would have been to do much about it. I suspect there are many people known to and suspected by law enforcement, probably far more than end up as active shooters. Most don't kill anyone. Sorting out the bad ones is tough. Also there is only so much law enforcement can do, much easier to solve crimes that have been committed than to stop future ones. Not that this should not be tried, I think it should.

You are right, we need better answers to that question. However I think the better question should be what can we do to reduce violence, and not just mass shootings or just gun violence. Mass shootings may be up, but the overall homicide rate is down, still too high, but down.

If restricting guns is found to be a way of reducing violence I'm all in favor of it, if not I'm not. Either way its an important issue, and one we need better answers to.

I don't remember kids bringing guns to school, even though a lot of us hunted. But maybe they did.

Rob, you grew up in the South as I did.

I remember some boys bringing firearms onto school property in their trucks,
But I don't recall anyone bringing a firearm into the school. That wasn't allowed and they knew better.
Some even wore camo to class in season so they wouldn't have to change after school
And could just head straight to the woods.
And some hunted right up to school starting in the morning and wore camo to class.

Been decades since I've seen firearms racks in the back windows of trucks even around here.

Some body needs to propose a constitutional amendment. Then we can do what democracies do. Have a great debate, make our cases, and then see how the votes turn out.

At this time I am sure it would fail. The only way it would pass is if a super majority of voters favored it. That's just not the case now.

The only way it would pass is to change minds, and I think the only way to do that is with concrete defensible and believable evidence doing so would reduce violence and gun deaths.

We are capable of doing studies like that but just have not done it. And though I have my opinions I really am not sure what the outcome would be.
