This week marks the centenary of the start of the Battle O Verdun, where the French lost a whole generation, and should or ever give the lie to the calumnies about French bravery.

Laurie, I heard a bit about this lengthy battle in history class, but why it took place was never made clear. Was it no more complicated than Germany's attempt to gain strategic territory? And was their ultimate goal to take all of France? Please shed some light if you can.

Faze,
From what I have read, the thought was that targeting France,(Englands most important ally and England being Germanys enemy),would collapse England.

There were an estimated 70 ,000 casualties a month.

As many different attacks that the Germans made, the French fought proud and strong and were able to hold them back.
Hense the saying "Ils Ne Passeront Pas"
They Shall not Pass

So Germany not only failed to take geography, they caused egregious fatalities on both sides and strengthened the alliance between France and England.
Thanks for the clarification, Vicky.
