I'm actually afraid of the mail now!!!!!

I went out to check the mailbox this afternoon.

There was nothing but a quarterly publication put out by the alumni association of the university I went to. A semi-glossy, slick looking, full color magazine type thing. Carrying it back inside I began to think about all the people who had handled it before me and the possibility that one of them could have had....

....the virus!!!! 😱 😨 😷 🤒 ☠

After I risked contaminating my house and brought it inside, I actually sprayed it lightly with disinfectant then put it outside in the direct sun for a couple of hours so the UV rays would kill any bacteria on it.

Fortunately 99.9% of the mail I get is junk that can go directly into the recycle bin, so I won't have to spend a lot of time disinfecting it all, but on the other hand, I ain't takin' no chances with this stuff!!!

@Jim W. "I went out to check the mailbox this afternoon. "

Just calm down...
First off just make sure you wash really good after handling the mail. And wash good when you're done. Then wash with each encounter. Ok?

I think the same about the mail, Jim. I use my disposable vinyl gloves to handle it. Then I put it on the table to sit for a day or so before opening it. After open I take out the contents and either put them in a "to pay" pile or throw it out. Then I wash my hands very good.

It's true that's there's a low chance of catching the virus from mail and packages..but there's STILL the chance, so better safe than sorry. This morning, the delivery man, rang the bell..I opened the door..but stepped right back into the hall, he automatically set the box down on the doorstep as far back from the door as possible, and just asked for my surname , so I didn't have to sign.

I put the latex gloves on, picked the box up and put it out in the back garden on the bench, and left it in the sun for a couple of hours.

I've just been with gloved hands again, and removed the outer cardboard box, and put it in the bin.. along with the gloves...

I've just in recovery from what we are almost certain was Covid-19..and my husband is still poorly and spends half the day in bed , so I'm not taking any risks whatsoever, regardless of how small..

I'm glad you are in recovery. Are you feeling better? How long were you ill? Was it bad? Sorry so many questions but I'm just curious about how one feels when sick with it. I hope you'll be feeling very well soon. 🌹 💗

I had it for a week... terrible for the first 2 days..couldn't stop shivering for 5 or 6 hours, absolutely freezing, then straight into a desperate high fever so hot I thought I might die with heat. I had horrendous diarrhoea , and at the time this hadn't been publicised as a symptom, so I thought I must have the worst gastric flu , but I was just sooo ill, I wasn't even aware there was a world out there. I had no cough tho'.. since then it's been declared that one in 3 cases of Covid-19 sufferers will have it affect their stomach rather than their cthroat or with a cough.. not everyone gets the latter.. ...

I felt terrible for 4 days..2 days in bed, couldn't eat anything at all, and just sipped tiny water.... I was up an about after quite soon,, but still feeling awful and exhausted...

2 days after I went down with it...my husband went the whole 9 yards.. coughing, dreadful fever, it was 3 days and nights before the fever broke and he was delirious, he didn't know where he was half the time.. ( he didn't get the stomach problem that I had , but he did have the horrendous coughing...and sore throat) ..he smokes (vapes)...and I don't smoke so I presume that I didn't get the lung congestion he ha, due to that...

he's still ill now... it's been around 9 days.. and although he's been able to get out of bed for a couple of hours each day and he's definitely improving to what he was, he's still poorly.. In fact he returned to bed this morning after just being up for 2 hours, and he's still there now.. feeling fairly awful..

Since then I've spoken to my doctor on the phone and he said we almost certainly had / have the covid-19 virus ... so we keep ourselves isolated in separate rooms in the house as much as possible.... It's been 2 weeks since I had it..and I seem to be recovered...
As I'd barely been out of the house for a few weeks prior to getting the virus, I can only presume my husband brought it into the house ..being as he goes out to work every day and mixes with many people ... and because my immune sytem was more compromised than his I went crashing down with it first..but recovered from it faster than him because I don't smoke so it didn't affect my breathing (albeit that I have slight asthma) .. as it has his...

Getting the virus from mail and packages is very low. Wash your hands after handling mail.

Ditto.......Wash your hands after handling mail.

Seems safer to me, to disinfect it outside before even potentially introducing the bug into your home.

According to reports, the COVID-19 virus can live on surfaces for hours and in some cases, depending on the material the surface is made of, for days.

Therefore, it seems likely that the bug could transfer through contact from one surface to another.

So what about the surfaces (countertops, tables, furniture, etc) you set the mail on?

Should you then go through the entire house scrubbing everything every time you bring the mail in?

I'd rather try to kill the bugs BEFORE they come in my house rather than after.

Do whatever you feel is best for YOU. I'm in the "just wash your hands" group.

And could we please keep all the pandemic related threads in that section of the forum???

I either leave all my mail and packages in the sunlight for a day or if it’s raining I spray them with 90% alcohol
