I'm an American. A question.

There were some things that came before which were not in our best interest. Slavery and those who held them in such high esteem they incurred a traitorous war to "keep" them. I could think of a few other things, not many though...

But then Catholic schools aren't heralded for critical thinking, are they?
Okay you've crossed the line from conversation to judgemental criticism just because you can't appreciate the point I've tried to make.

I don't remember in my lifetime the probability of slavery returning any time soon. Nor do I remember anyone suggesting that it come back.

The topic of this thread is the likelihood of civil war in this country. I tried to show that there are forces here trying to dismantle our civilized society by sowing the seeds of dissension. The next logical conclusion is that as long as that goes on, then civil war is the inevitable result.

Beware of people suggesting simple solutions to complex problems. That's how extremists gain power and lead extreme movements against the establishment.

If I couldn't appreciate your point it's only because I didn't understand it. You've explained it so much better for me now, so thank you.

Democracy contains dissension and opposition. The solution is balance, which works fine until it's a question of having full rights or not.........but, anyway..........

❤️I liked you better when you were Tom Selleck🤗
;)Just kidding;)

As I think back on it, I don't believe I ever was Tom Selleck and that it was just a dream.

This all started in the distant past, when I was a kid, and some "wise" guy said that everyone had the right to do whatever they wanted to do.

Now, we have internet, AI, smartphones, fly around the world and 500 channels of mind killing TV and it seems no one is happy!

It's a bold statement these days. I'm not on one side or the other because this is where the trouble began as I remember and I no longer relate to either side. I am afraid for America because we are so divided against ourselves it's pitiful. I wonder if there could/will be a civil war in my country? It's possible because the hatred here is so extreme and no one sees hatred as the problem; they just want to continue to blame the other side until the hatred destroys a nation.

If you're from a different country is anything similar going on there? How do you feel about it?

Yes, in my country - the UK - we're being held hostage by a failed government that is now led by someone no-one voted for. Does it get any worse than that?

As for the US..... I'm with you. I live the US, I spent 18 years living there (which really screwed up my Essex accent :D) I do despair a little at what is happening. The self-hatred is indeed sad. The polarization is anything but productive. Words are being stolen and regurgitated, words such as "patriot". It's sickening.

As a world power, I hope the US finds a solution. From this distance it doesn't look like it'll happen any time soon, but I hope it happens soon enough. We're allw watching what goes on there, because your culture (which some falsely suggest doesn't exist at all) is your greatest export. The world doesn't need division, half the population pitted against the other half. These are our neighbors, people we pass in stores. We can do better. Much better.

just try getting rid of your guns for a start and then starting from scratch again??
davy...you really do not 'get it'! It is the guns that keep us from fighting! If you start a war in the USA, you have a low possibility of survival. Same goes for our military or police force...if the make war against the people, they have a low chance of survival.

I so disagree. The 1960s came as close to that as anything I've ever seen.
That was a bunch of mostly 'drugged out' young adults having a wild party! Nothing more.... I was in college in the 60's and yes, I saw all the hippies, drugs, and protests...but it was and still is just a small part of the population on the United States of America. Nothing more...

There may be a civil war but not like in the old days. It will be more sinister. While I was trying to think of another word to use with sinister, I looked up sneaky and stealth. Though not the word I was trying to think of, this is the example the thesaurus gave for stealth:
What they could not accomplish by violence and chicanery, they would have to accomplish by stealth.

I believe certain factions in this country, such as White Supremacists, are seeking to wage war against Blacks, Jews, gays and anybody else they have issues with. Some attacks have been brazen, however and these attacks are on the rise. The internet has increased their ability to recruit like minded people.
You listen to the news to often.

I agree these groups exist and they are evil in every way and dangerous. But, their numbers are small and unlike any other country our population is armed! These crazies understand there is no way they can disarm millions of people who would openly stand against them. The " like-minded" American population who will come together and fight against anyone who dares to stand up against our freedom...I don't fear them at all.

I feel your pain, Chic, but it applies to the whole,
civilised world!

The children are in charge today and though they
are lovely people, they really have no idea about
very much, they think that a demonstration march
is better than a job, they are forcing silly things to
the top, if enough older folk get fed up with stupid
things that are being forced through legislation, then
there will be retaliation and if you are right, it could
turn to civil war, in many countries.

Much as I like you Chic, I hope that you are worrying
for no good reason, I don't want to see civil war.

Mike.
