I remember when I lived in the Detroit area that we'd get a week in June just about every year where the temperature would hit 105 every day. Hardly anyone had air conditioners, at most maybe one room in the house had a window unit.
The old folk would die off in droves. They didn't have air, they wouldn't open their windows because of "the crime", they wouldn't run fans because of electric bills and they wouldn't go to places to get cool because ....well....they just wouldn't. So they'd sit in their hot apartments and die.
