Hello. It's nice to meet such friendly, wonderful people. I just joined, and I spent a couple of hours just reading forum posts so I could get to know you. These days I am experimenting with making homemade dog food for my little dog. Any one out there making their own dog food? I see recipes for it. For example they say two cups of rice, but they don't say if it is cooked or raw. I'd like some advice on this subject.

Welcome to the forum smilingmore! There are lots of dog lovers here. NEVER give your dog uncooked rice! And just as for people, brown rice is healthier than white rice. Does your little dog have any health issues that need to be taken into consideration for diet, like diabetes or grain allergies?

welcome :) We feed all our rescue babies real food. pork chops, an occasional steak, ground beef, chicken, spaghetti w/sausage, chicken livers. Sometime we mix it with cooked white rice, sometimes with oatmeal. There is always a bowl of crunchy dog food on the floor to help keep teeth clean. most of the time we will add some kind of broth to the rice and let it absorb for better flavor. Then, there's the occasional ice cream social. Yeah... we spoil them, but, after plucking them from kill shelters and seeing some of the horrible abuse they have suffered, we figure they have earned a little spoiling.:)

Hello and welcome. My dogs have all gone over the rainbow bridge but I did have one who had failing kidneys and had to be on a low protein diet. No meat except to add a bit of flavor. Usually used a bit of bacon grease which was recommended by the vet. He lived a few years on that diet. Everything was well cooked including the rice. I even heard it was bad for birds to eat uncooked oatmeal and rice. It expands in their crop or stomach and can kill them.

Thank you for welcoming me to the site. My little dog, Gidget, has no health problems. People say she is too thin, and that is why I decided to make homemade dog food. Of course I wouldn't feed uncooked rice, but I was wondering if the measurement of two cups, was made before it was cooked, or after.

Thank you, Ruth. You must be a bird lover. When my cat, who keeps the mice at bay in the house, crosses the bridge, I intend to buy a bird.

Yes, they deserve spoiling. I found Gidget in a box! Let me explain that. A lady sat in a deserted parking lot with a box of puppies and a sign that read Free Puppies. I chose the one with the smallest feet. I had no idea what she would grow up to look like. She is so adorable I wish I had taken the entire litter of three.

Canned, PURE pumpkin, no other ingredients, just pumpkin, is very good for fiber, between 1 to 2 tablespoons depending on size of dog. Mix it right into their food. A vet and a groomer both told me this.

Ah, yes, good question. Didn't mean to insult your common sense :redface-new:. I guess I would consider the quantity of other ingredients in the recipe. Would 4 cups of cooked rice (assuming that 2 cups uncooked would double in size) become the major ingredient when it's all done? Some dogs get constipated when given too much rice.

Do you mix this in with dry food or canned food? I heard carrots are good, but she hates them. I don't know how she will react to the pumpkin, but I'll give it a try. Thanks, RadishRose.

The recipe calls for 2 cups of brown rice, one pound of ground meat, 8 ounces of vegetables, and 6 cups of water. I have been using cooked rice, but the amount of water makes it sound like I should use raw rice instead. If I were to use raw rice, it would blow up to four cups of rice to one pound of ground meat. I think that might be too much rice. I cut the water to 2 cups, then cook everything together. This is a three week to a month supply of food for her as she only weighs five pounds.
