Immigrants are flooding into the U.S.

Over the last few days, thousands of migrants, including many hailing from Nicaragua, Cuba and Venezuela, huddled along the waters of the Rio Grande, while others waded across the river from El Paso’s sister city on the Mexican side of the border, Ciudad Juarez, to cross into the US.

Many of them are fleeing gun violence. Guess where most of the guns are coming from.

US-made guns are ripping Central America apart and driving migration north
Between 2007 and 2019, more than 179,000 firearms were captured in Mexico and five Central American countries and traced to gun shops and gun factories in the United States. Mexico’s foreign ministry believes this is the tip of the iceberg, and estimates that more than two million guns crossed the Rio Grande over the last decade.

The weapons originate in the legal US gun market – the biggest in the world by far, with 393 million firearms in civilian hands, according to the last count. They then cross into a parallel black market through four main methods: a private sale loophole; straw buyers (people with clean records paid to buy guns); theft from gun shops; and the sale of parts to make un-serialized weapons, or “ghost guns”.

Traffickers take these guns from states with looser laws, such as Virginia and Georgia, to cities with stricter laws, including Washington and New York, which are suffering from sharp increases in gun violence. They also smuggle them south to Mexico, over the 2,000-mile border, hidden in cars and trucks.

The US has a problem with immigration due to internal violence in other nations. We welcome people, from where the nation, we don't like, acts violently towards its citizens. Yet, we reject people from the nations we like, who are violently being acted on by narco-terrorists. We get very picky about who's doing the violent acts. The problem is those refugees can walk to the US without having to cross a barrier ocean. In truth, a few 100,000 refugees will be a transitory burden on the 300 million US citizens, which is a true problem, but the fear is they could upset future voting patterns.

WE have thousands arriving by boat every year..all illegal..yet no-one throws them back out..instead our government has closed hotels to the public and using Tax payers money are housing the illegal immigrants in them.. while people who live near these hotels lives are being made miserable by the antics of these immigrants who are hanging around in intimidating gangs.. and also partying until 4 or 5am with loud music etc.. .

It beggars belief.!!

This situation is definitely not limited to the US. Its all over the world. Why?

One reason is that the countries from which almost all of them originate don't hand out 'free stuff' - people on benefits in the western world can live better than those breaking their backs elsewhere.
Now, I'm in danger of taking this into the banned political area.. but I just want to say one thing.. and that is.. Stop giving them free public housing.. and stop giving them Social security ( Dole).. and just see how many illegal immigrants 'fleeing from conflict'' turn up in their hundreds and thousands in Boats then...

Our Social Security is payment earned. We call Dole Welfare.

In the U.S., we have political leaders and media pundits telling the world that we have open borders, which is far from the truth, but that's what refugees believe, and also that they're going to get all sorts of free stuff when they get here. There may be some truth to that because we don't like to see people suffer.

Denver is putting immigrants up in community rec-centers. Obviously, in doing so, the taxpayers who paid for the rec-centers aren't able to use them.

Coming home to roost. Are government aided specifically by the CIA, has spent the last 50 years creating the problems we are facing now, by supporting a long line of dictators, who in turn have robbed those countries blind, and created these horrible conditions for their citizens.
I think you'd have to go back a couple/few millennia to arrive at the source.

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

What's this NIMBY stuff? We need to find a way. We're here. Except for Native Americans, we got here from somewhere else.

Have we gotten so smug and self-satisfied that we insist upon keeping it all for ourselves? Can we not find a way to share and to welcome those who weren't lucky enough to be born here?

Apparently, yes. We have gotten smug and self-satisfied. Repeat after me: entitled. We are entitled and selfish.

Nope.. not us..we simply do not have the space nor the Infrastructure to support a Million Illegal Immigrants every year...

I believe a problem in the US is overpopulation. Controlling and slowing people coming into the country is important to slow that. I sympathize with people who live under violent and/or repressive governments, but question how much allowing those folks asylum here really helps. An argument could be made that in places like Iran and Cuba those countries would be better today had we not allowed the brain drain by admitting many of their best, brightest, and most reasonable population.

A second problem is the lack of our ability to enforce our own immigration laws. Until that is done I see no solution to this problem.

I would not oppose some amnesty allowing some illegals to stay, I think it would help our economy and be less disruptive to us. However not before we solve the problem of lack of enforcement of the laws. We have tried it before and it did not work.
The border used to be under control not all that long ago people.
Like @Pepper I'd want to know when that was. Not within my adult life for sure... Maybe during WWII?

Those days are long gone, policies of the past not useful today. It's almost 140 years old now...

@hollydolly Those lines from a poem by Emma Lazarus are engraved on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty in on Liberty Island in New York Harbor.
Very nice and welcoming for the immigrants who arrived through Ellis Island .. unfortunately this tiny Island smaller than Oregon has already 70 million people .,that we know of, and at least another Million or more we don't.. and the govt are not building new schools.. and we have a serious shortage of doctors.. doctors surgeries, hospitals, and housing.. .. the Teachers are snowed under with trying to cope with sometimes 30 kids in a class where 15 different languages are being spoken and only one kid speaks English..

When I lived there, a million years ago, I saw England was just not equipped as USA, a nation of immigrants. However, for those ex-colonials, actual ones, I saw as something you guys were stuck with for good or ill.
