We're going to get serious about immigration again in the near future in the US. Any thoughts on on the ten to twelve million Mexican nationals in this country illegally; should there be a clear path to citizenship? What's your thinking on this?

Who's the we as in "we're going to get serious"?
Send them home or throw the ones who have committed crimes in prison.
We already have laws to citizenship the path is already laid out. Stay with it.
Iv'e done enough thinking for now Good Night

Sid, I was referring to the political bigwigs in Washington, who the President has said Congress should take up the issue and pass a comprehensive immigration bill and he wants something that the twelve million plus, who are here illegally, he want a path to their citizenship in their bill. It appears this is something we may not want to discuss or want to discuss in open forum. If so I will withdraw my opening remarks and put my comments in my blog.

Raise it in Speakers Corner group Basefare, it's for all kinds of touchy subjects, not just OZ stuff.

We're always at loggerheads over immigration here too and would like to get some perspectives on it from people in other countries.

I did not intend to leave the impression I did not want to discuss. I was just ready for some sleep.
It is my opinion that when the president and/or Congress want to do something about immigration they are only intrested in something that will benefit their political party.
If they have the best intrest of the country at heart enforce the laws as they are. Reward those who came here legally.
It seems to me illegals are a huge drain on our finances. We are going belly up fast enough as it is.
This is something that is hard for me to discuss without seeming to be hateful and I can not dwell too long on the subject. So If I decide not to take much part in the discussion that is why.
I am very intrested in reading and hearing what others have to say. For what it is worth as far as I am concerned your remarks can stay.

Those who come here, go through the process to become legal citizens, learn and use the English language, find employment and support their families, follow our rules and regulations are welcome in America from what I see. I've worked with fine people who came from Mexico and they have very little tolerance for illegals who come here with the wrong intentions. I don't know the details of what the government is planning, but would also like to hear other's opinions on the subject.

Maybe if the 'haves' of the First World learnt to share more and help the 'have nots' in the the Second and Third Worlds the problem of mass migration in search of a better life would diminish...

Ironic really 'White America' has its ancestral roots in poor European migrants who came to the New World in search of a better life.

That's been my experience, also. Mostly Mexican-Americans here in California for a long time and none of them that I know liked the illegals. Now, we are being overwhelmed by China, India, the Middle East, Africa, Central America . . . and that's mostly legal. Don't think there's gonna be any room for the space aliens when they finally show up...

I think there has been help and assistance given to other poorer countries by Americans individually through donations and volunteering, and by the government as a whole. Yes, my ancesters, before my parents came to America from Gemany and Poland. They became citizens, mastered the English language, and led a productive lives as American citizens. That's what makes this country the wonderful 'melting pot' of different cultures that it is. It's the illegals, who don't want to become productive citizens, but want the benefits of living here, that are causing concern. They should become legal, be proud to be Americans, and either 'love it or leave it', IMO.

Many people are not coming to this country for a better life like our ancestors did. That's the difference and the problem.
The ones who are, deserve a chance at citizenship.

2013 ... Down in this part of the country, a good percentage of the Hispanics coming into Texas from over the border these days, are not Mexican. ..Illegals, the hard working ones with families to support, from Mexico .. many found going back to Mexico during the Recession was a better choice for them.. That's what happened in Texas anyway.

Today, illegal Hispanics crossing the border are coming from Central and South America ... every "illegal" news story around Houston, involves people from Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, etc. Don't know how many are here for a "better life" or other not so good reasons, like drug trafficking.
With all the crime and drugs we hear about, I would guess the later.
On the whole, it doesn't appear that these people could care less about citizenship, or the United States.

To the better life comment ..... some people's idea of a better life for themselves, is coming to the United States and destroying the American way of life! .. the following article is old, but a telling tale of what has gone on ....

To Boo's Mom: Bonnie

I live in Oklahoma now but I spent forty-seven years in Lubbock. I expect Houston is larger that whole of West Texas put together but we didn't see any Hispanics from Central America coming up our way. The last figures I heard out of Austin was that Texas minorities would be the majority by 2025. The Lubbock population is about thirty-five percent Hispanic. I was intending to come at the immigration issue from a political standpoint, meaning if our Republicans didn't get busy and make friends with the Mexican Hispanics (in addition to the Florida Cubans) the Republicans will never keep a majority in either House, and Texas Republicans can kiss it goodbye.

Post Script: I like that Indian Powwow cartoon. I have one that shows three Indians with the comment, "Fighting terrorism since 1492. I like that, too.

Probably so .. could be before then. Houston is about 45% Hispanic now... And yes, Texas will be in the Blue state column very soon.
