This is my story. My Dad was in the navy during WWII overseas. My older brother missed wars and never enlisted...same with my younger brother. My time was the Viet Nam war. I got drafted and was 1a. ( fit for duty ). I was one of those "hippie musicians", on drugs, and waving the peace flag high. I grew up just south of San Francisco and there was no end to the hippie movement there. "Make love not war" was our motto. I found a draft councilor that helped me obtain a Conscientious Objector status ( 1-O ).
On my 1st appeal I answered many questions on a questionnaire, and then sent it to my local draft board. It was not good enough, so they required me to come to a meeting and bring a friend. After that I was granted the C.O. status. I had to devout 2 years to civil service that was approved by the draft board. After completion of doing my duty to the U.S.A. I returned to civilian life. I got no benefits from our Government.
Religions say don't kill. Some of our most revered people are pacifists. I wont name the hundreds of them, but you know of many yourself. These people are who I learned from. I don't have any other kind of mentors. ( maybe a few musicians ).
I was inspired to create this thread because I ran into a video that a host was interviewing a young Israeli woman who became a C.O. in Israel. She reminded me of the same feelings I had about how I was against participating in war. After she finished the service to her nation, they put her in prison.
