It was a really good monster movie, Matthew Broderick's character was appealing, the writing was good, but Godzilla fans hated it because the monster wasn't Godzilla. It was a raptor of some sort. They reinvented Godzilla, and you can't do that (to Godzilla fans).

Maybe if they'd have said the monster was Godzilla's juvenile stage or pupa stage or some weird stage of development - he actually went through several - but I don't know if they'd have gotten away with it. It would have been a hard sell.

Me and my kids used to stay up late Saturday nights for a show called Creature Features that ran old monster movies, including that one. Every year they had a weekend-long Godzilla movie marathon. Surprisingly, the kids really dug the old Japanese originals.

These days they hate bad dubbing.
 
All we kids loved the first Godzilla with Raymond Burr. Those kid's level mini suit Godzilla's were a laugh. Given huge advances with CGI and a big budget, this new Godzilla has large chances of being more real like. I love the enormously loud monster sound they choose for it's voice. Always loved how Japanese people as humans with an ocean country with all its mysteries love all manner of creature monster fiction.

As someone that watches few movies, I might see it this coming work week and also Napolean.
 
We saw it today. It is a Japanese movie with English subtitles.

For anyone who thinks it's "fluff", the plot is solid. It is set in Japan at the end of the WW II. The main character in the film is a Kamakazi pilot who backs out of his mission and lives with the shame for years. The characters in the movie are very well developed. It also has some strong political references.

Hard to imagine for a Godzilla movie, but it was a tear-jerker at the end. Best movie I've seen in years.
 
By using only subtitles, by making it into an art film, they are denying their best audience, the young.

I went to high school at Palmer in Colorado Springs with Elvira for a very short time... Of course, I did not know this until she became 'Elvira' way after high school years. She was not a girl in high school anyone really noticed, let's say she matured a bit after high school. If I recall correctly, she was only in high school for a year...but I am not sure. Guess, opportunity lost....or something?
