In This Day And Age MORTARS ?????

Obviously, more media-inflicted trash. Given the ridiculously efficient armaments of today, i.e., sophisticated missiles systems, why in hell would a MAJOR POWER mess around with "self-propelled mortars"? Am I missing something here? Dubious, as usual. imp

"Russia Moves World’s Most Powerful Mortars Near Sea Of Japan"

"Russia announced Tuesday that the world’s heaviest and most powerful self-propelled mortars have been inducted into the artillery units of the Eastern Military District in Primorsky Territory. Col. Alexander Gordeev said the 240mm 2S4 Tyulpan mortar “has no equals” in the world, reports Sputnik News. Primorsky Territory, which also borders China, is located on the coast of Sea of Japan."

No you're not missing anything.

Like the rifle the mortar is still a valuable and versatile infantry wearpon.

For all the most sophisticated weaponry in the world the bottom line is still "the grunt on the ground with a gun", Kipling's £poor bloody infantry".

Nothing yet been invented which is better at taking and holding ground.

Every person and every device in all the armed forces of the world is operating to one end - in support of the infantry.

Just a reminder, I'm an air force vet!
