Insane Traffic Stops, Lies & Excuses

Excuses for speeding. I have heard some great ones over the years, but the one I kind of liked the best was the lady that I stopped and she asked me if anyone ever talked me out of giving them a speeding ticket. I told her, "Yes, one time." Her reply was, "Well, what did she say?"

I had to smile. I told her, "Have a nice day" and I walked away.

I know she appreciated that. Humor can be the best medicine.

Construction Zones are the worse. Nobody gets a pass for speeding through a CZ. At 40-45 mph, we allow an extra 11 mph. After that, we issue a citation. That’s fair, isn’t it?

What about drunkdrivers, 911? My late husband used to have them park their vehicle and give them a lift home, rather than embarrass them and their family. He was notorious for NOT giving citations.

Here in PA, the legal limit is .08. If my driver was right at .08 and maybe .09 and if he was respectful, then I may allow him to call for a ride. But, you have to understand that drinking and driving kills thousands each year. It’s one of those laws that really needs to be enforced.

I was driving on my patrol one night at about 3:00 a.m. In front of me was a driver driving very erratic. I pulled him over and immediately recognized him as the family court judge in the county. I had him do a breathalyzer and he blew a 1.1. I arrested him and took him back to the barracks to call his wife. He never asked me to cut him a break or gave me any threats. It was all handled calmly and professionally. His name never made it into the newspapers, so I imagined that he had friends.

Fair enough. On a side note many jurisdictions have contracts with private companies that have contracts with DOT and the cops are not assigned but the unions have a list of cops who volunteer for this and get paid handsomely and the police departments get paid for the use of their vehicles. There were a number of complaints usually from the site foremen about the cops sleeping in their cars especially at night so now some kind of weird arrangement is on duty cops are now assigned to these sites as part of their patrol duties. The unions need to vigorously address that. Also the fatality rate for roadside construction workers, roadside assistance teams, cops, firefighters and EMS personnel especially at night is alarming. I know about the lane change or speed reduction policy but that doesn't appear to be working in Florida.

I guess this qualifies for a traffic stop.....
I'm an obvious night owl, and I have mentioned this on SF before, but I work out late at night or early in the morning depending upon how you want to look at it. But earlier in the summer I decided I wanted to take a run thru the downtown city area where I live. I was running thru the down town area, on the berm of the road, not the side walk. It was about 2am. Being in my own mind and deep in thought I suddenly noticed the red and blue lights behind me. I could hear vehicle noise so I just thought well the police has got someone. I didn't do anything and just kept running. I them heard the officer burp the siren twice and I thought WOW, this is serious. So I ran upon to the sidewalk, stopped and turned to see what was going on.
It was me they were pulling over. The officer wanted to know what I was doing and where I was going. I told him I was just out for a run. The officer flashing the light in my eyes said, I'm more interested in what you're running from at 2 AM! I pleaded my case and he let me go, I cut my run short and went home. I'm not sure he believed me, because I was only home about 15 minutes when he called to check on me. I don't run after dark anymore. Lesson learned.

We sometimes will park a car fully dressed with emblem and lights and just leave it sit maybe about 100 yards before the Construction Zone to get everyone's attention to slow down. It seems to work (mostly). This idea was started somewhere in the south, but I forget which state. The car is left with the rooftop lights turned on and doors locked. One of the patrol Troopers checks it every hour. We started out by putting a dummy behind the wheel, but we were mocked for doing it, so we took the dummy out.

There are plenty of young people who will speed thru a School Zone area. They are either on their cell phone or, and yes this thought does happen............ they plainly don't care about a School Zone speed limit. "I don't have kids and don't want any little brats, so why do I care?"

What cop cars need are television screens set into the sides of the vehicles. They'd be linked up to a computer inside the vehicle, and whatever the driver typed into the program, out it would come, flashing across the screens.

People would be running down construction workers while trying to read the screens then.
My idea was more tongue-n-cheek than anything.

After seeing that great big round light on top of the cop car along with the funny looking stop sign on the hood, I figured why not deck the cars out in full style. :)

It was a "Seizure" under the 4th AM, since you were seized while driving, yes that is a traffic stop. From your facts alone it seems quite UNconstitutional.
