International Women’s Day

So many of us stopped celebrating ourselves after being shamed for daring to be in the women's movement.

There's no need to feel ashamed! We've earned our place in history and can be recognized for all we've done. Yay!!

i took a Women in Literature course when i went to college as very 'non-traditional' student (translation: OLD--i was in my late 40s). First day the Prof asks us how many of us know our grandmother's names. Most of the traditional students didn't only the 2 or 3 of us 'non-trad' ones. Worse--only a couple of them knew anything about what kind of life their grandma's had, their childhoods and young adult lives.

The professor's point was that the devaluing of women is so pervasive even in so-called modern, civilized, 1st world nations that many don't bother to learn about their personal heritage much less how much women have contributed to the world in general. Admittedly, the latter is harder to learn because even when someone thought to record a significant thought voiced by female, they rarely gave her credit for it--hence the saying 'Anonymous was a woman'. Same goes for accomplishments and contributions to society. All too often discoveries and inventions were attributed to Men (husbands/fathers/bosses) not the women that really did the work.

i was blessed with a Dad that never put limits on me due to my gender. He often explained that some tasks might take more planning because the average woman lacks the brute strength of the average man, and then went on to teach me how to use basic physics principles (leverage, momentum) to compensate for the lesser inherent strength.

i never really allowed anyone to make feel ashamed for being proud of and a supporter of other women. Quite frankly i was disappointed in some of the well known leaders of the 60s/70s resurgence of feminism. And while it bugged me that many men found ways to use the movement to seduce women, i judge people on their individual behaviors not what some or even many of a group do.

In time i evolved into more of a humanist, i may be a tad more fierce in defending women and children against certain things because our culture is still male dominated and too many of them resort to using that edge of physical strength to assert it. But when anyone, or whole classes of humans are being stereotyped by any demographic descriptor i tend to speak out against it.

Ladies...let's all help one another. Let's always be supportive. Together we are stronger.
I'll refrain from posting Madeleine Albright's quote about women who don't help other women.
It was too strong but she boldly made her point.

One thing we can do is pass on to our children is what we know not only of women's history in general, but what we know of our female ancestors. i didn't know much of my extended family well till after my parents divorced and Mom and i moved to NJ where most of both sides of the family resided. i was 11 a loner and considered odd for many reasons but what is relevant here is that i loved to listen to the stories my Irish Paternal Grandma and my Aunties from both sides of family told about my parents when they were young.

i made sure to pass those stories on to both my sons and my daughter, as well as stories of my parents when i was young, my 3 sisters (who could be examples of a comparative studies of different ways women express their strengths).

My sons have had women they were seeing 'warn' them "I'm a strong independent women." To which they replied-- "I prefer that kind of woman, I was raised by one who comes from such women on both sides of her family. "

a little fun for International Women's Day

Question: "Why is psychoanalysis a lot quicker for men than for women?"

Answer: "When it's time to go back to his childhood, he's already there."

A second childhood wouldn't be so bad but what I hate is when they're going through a second teenage-hood; teenagers: sigh.
