Ireland is the first country to legalize gay marriage!

It is ironic that this most Catholic of countries should be the first. Must be a reaction to the revelations of the deplorable treatment of children by nuns and priests in the past. Not much hope of this happening in many parts of the world but maybe here and there eventually...

I forgot to mention that it was the first by popular referendum...

Scotland, England and Wales all legalised gay marriage in 2014. Northern Ireland just did so this week. But there was no referendum.

I think the linked article is saying that there was a referendum in Ireland on the subject and that it happened in the spring of this year.

'Now, with last week’s Supreme Court ruling in the United States, and with the successful referendum in Ireland this spring, same-sex marriage is recognized in more than 20 countries, and that number will continue to grow....'

I guess when it's a referendum as opposed to a decision by the Supreme Courty (as was ours), it's even more impressive as an indicator that the hearts of people are changing. Good for the folks of Ireland is all I can say.
