Irresponsible Bullie Owners, GRRRRRRR

It's difficult around here. The real live bangers you can report to the police and humane society. But there are the guys who manage to hide in the cracks of the system. You see different guys all day long walking bull breed dogs. I'm sure some of them are legitimate owners and bless them. But the rest make my hackles stand up.

I took a long walk doing errands today. The first dog had a middle aged man walking her. She didn't look much past puppyhood herself. But her teats were almost to the ground. Somebody had been breeding this dog...While the shelter around the way euthanizes maybe a hundred of her relatives a week.

Dog number two, the guy walking him might or might not be an actual owner. I know some of these guys get paid to give these poor pups their daily "workout". The look in this dogs eyes was chilling. Not aggression but fear. My hand passed in front when I got down to pet him and he cowered. Plus he had a heavy prong collar.

My fantasy? Magically having some heavy duty wire cutters and threatening to turn this young man into a eunuch. As he runs for his life I turn to the dog and cut his chain and collar and he happily follows me home. Maybe twice the size of Callie and he cowers at a hand...I don't want to even imagine his life.

Apparently around a million Pit Bulls are euthanized in the USA every year.
And according to Animal People, only 1 in 600 Pit Bulls will find a forever home.
Yet they are most bred dog of all breeds in the USA ...

Abby, our overweight Black Lab, takes me for 3 to 4 mile walks. The route we take can have us meeting a number of pedestrians out for walks. Abby has never met a person she doesn't like want to like/lick. The other pedestrians don't know that. So, as we see someone approaching, we move off the sidewalk and she sits down between my legs. She patiently waits, occasionally looking up at me, until the people have passed. Then we take off again. It is amazing how many people say, "Thank you!" as they walk by and we are patiently waiting for them.

Pets are to be treasured and cared for as part of the family. Yes, they can be as difficult as raising teenagers. It's the responsibility you accept when you decide to take in a pet. I fear that the multitude of those who have many of the breeds that can have a genetic disposition towards aggression may treat their own children as bad or worse than the dogs they own.

What these idiots don't realize is that the old time "sporting dog" breeders trained their dogs to be canine aggressive. But they knew how to tap into the bully breeds as people pleasing. The dogs would go against instinct, no dog is hardwired to fight another dog. They were taught to fight to please their human. Brutalizing a people pleasing breed creates either a pup too fearful to do much of anything at all. Or one that will eventually turn on the hand that beats it. In any case they aren't creating prize winning dogs.
