Is Anybody Watching Fire & Rescue and/or Medical Shows?

I started watching Grey's Anatomy from it's pilot episode. A few years into it, I started saying I wouldn't watch next season, but they always hooked me with their season finales. Until about two seasons ago, that is. I no longer like most of the newer characters and never cared that much for the show's main character, Meredith Grey. I tried watching Private Practice, a spin off, but didn't like it. My husband and I watched a couple of episodes of The Good Doctor when it first premiered but I didn't get back to it, mostly because I was waiting to watch it with him and the only thing he didn't fall asleep on was Scandal. At some point I intend to get back to it (via Hulu).

I started watching 9-1-1 and liked it. It took me a few episodes to get into its spin off, 9-1-1: Lone Star, but I actually like that better. I recently started watching (again) Station 19, a Grey's spin off. The pilot interested me enough that I'll watch Ep 2 and may stick with it this time. I tried watching Chicago Fire and Fire Country. Didn't get past the first episode of either one, mostly because I didn't care for the characters. Have you...do you watch any of these types of shows?

I hardly watched any tv for a couple decades. I mention this because when I started back, everything was new to me. I started to binge watch so much when I first got back to it.

One of the first shows I binge watched was Private Practice. I was hooked. I stayed up for hours watching one episode to the next. People told me that I should try Grey's Anatomy next. I never did. There was so much medical tragedy on Private Practice, I wasn't sure I could handle 17 seasons of it, at the time.

I also considered Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. but I didn't, probably for the same reason.

The Good Doctor hooked me from the first episode. I wasn't as interested in the medical drama part but the part about an autistic guy saving a child's life on his way to an interview, it was so compelling that I was hooked. I haven't watched the newest season.

Same with New Amsterdam. I was hooked. The idea of a doctor and the head of a hospital who was positive, hopeful and trying to change the system for the better at every turn was the selling point for me. The medical drama part was secondary. I liked the ending of that.

Good Sam was also intriguing. The first episode was great. But that went off air so fast.

I tried The Resident, but it seemed a little too wild west. This one doctor got to make life and death decisions but everyone else was afraid to do anything. I kept hoping that hospitals aren't really like that. I stopped watching after a couple episodes.

I've been meaning to try Transplant but haven't gotten around to it.

Does Royal Pains count as a medical drama? That was a fun show. The medical part is pretty secondary though.

Doogie Howser, M.D. is more my speed in terms of the medical part of the medical drama.

I've pretty much had my fill of medical and rescue shows. The last medical show I watched with any regularity was the comedy “Scrubs” (2001–2010). Now I occasionally catch a random episode of the re-aired Australian series “Dr. Blake Mysteries," which ran from 2013 to 2018.

I didn't watch Private Practice for long. It was a Grey's Anatomy spin off that IMO just wasn't as good. You should at least give Grey's a try. Lots of drama and trauma but well done during the first few years. I finally dropped it a couple of seasons ago. I no longer cared for most of the new characters they introduced and got tired of the story lines.

My son was very much into Chicago Fire but I could not get into it. I have to like the actors and or characters in a show and I did not connect to either of those in that show. My husband and I watched The Good Doctor when it first came on. I think we saw a couple of episodes, then somehow never got back to it. I keep saying that someday I'll get back to it because I did like it and of course was rooting for the main character. Never saw Royal Pains so can't say if it counts.

There's another person that I talk with frequently who has been trying to get me interested in Grey's, and I'm really interested because I love that feeling of being in a long series, knowing you can always go back to it and know the characters. But somehow it never appeals to me when I'm in the mood for a new show.

I just started Longmire and considering Sweet Magnolias or maybe one of the Hallmark series. I'm really enjoying Good Witch. Nice to find a calm show on a stressful day.

I tried watching Longmire...just couldn't get into it. Same with Good Witch. Maybe they were a little too calm for me.

@PeppermintPatty I became somewhat desensitized to the blood and guts but not completely. Some scenes, I just closed my eyes. It makes me think of a time we had assembly in high school and I think they were showing explicit scenes of heart surgery or something like that. I was sitting next to my favorite teacher. She and I wound up holding on to each other we were so grossed out.
:D

Not trying to sell you on it, but Good Witch was a slow start for me. I didn't realize that there were 5 or 6 movies with the name The Good Witch, with the same actress and the same theme before the show. Some people were already fans from the movies.

The magic part started off really corny. It got to be more about the relationships after that first part, but then got back to the hokey magic sometimes. It's enough about the town and the relationships that the occasional magic either helps explain the plot or is easy enough for me to overlook.

I have not watched any of those shows but I seem to recall that you enjoyed the show Eureka. If I am right and if you are looking for something new to try, have you watched Resident Alien ? The plot is very different from Eureka but it does have that same quirky Sci Fi small town feel.

And if I am wrong about you watching it, well, it wouldn't be the first time that I was wrong...lol.

I never got into medical dramas. I did try Grey's Anatomy when it first came out but I couldn't stand the lead character so stopped watching it after a few weeks. The last "rescue" type of show I watched was Rescue Me. I enjoyed it but when it ended it's run I didn't really have any interest in watching any similar "rescue" type of show. If you haven't watched Rescue Me, I would suggest it but only if you like Dennis Leary and don't mind watching a show centered around 9/11.

Do you think one would have had to see the movies to have a better appreciation of the series? Maybe I'll try it again when Abbott Elementary and my other favorite shows are on hiatus.

You are correct Mark. I loved Eureka! I loved Henry and Sherriff Carter. I watched the entire series three times and my nephew even put a season or two on DVD for me. I also like Resident Alien. I'm current with that and can't wait for the next season. Alan Tudyk is just so fun to watch. I'm with you on Grey's lead, if you are talking about Ellen Pompeo who plays Meredith Grey. I wondered how she got that gig in the first place. I don't dislike her, I just think she's "meh".

I think I half tried to watch Rescue Me once. Never even got through the first episode. That may or may not be because I got distracted and never got back to it. I don't know if you've seen my posts about how my ADD affects my TV watching. Usually for an hour show (really 42 minutes on ad free streaming) I usually watch between 22 and 26 minutes, then go on to something else and come back to the first one later. Trouble is...I keep finding new stuff to watch. :ROFLMAO: I have to be really into an episode to watch it from beginning to end in one sitting. Same with movies, except I may watch a little longer before stopping.

Nice "talking" TV with you Mark! :D

I don't think so. I haven't seen the movies. I just think the show starts off with the expectation that the vibe makes sense because of the movies. It takes a while for it to make sense, for me anyway.

Speaking of witches, it's a different vibe from The Good Witch I'm sure, but did you ever watch Witches of Eastwick? It wasn't one of my favorites but I watched it until the end.

No, didn't see it at the time, but I do remember it was a popular movie. Cher, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jack Nicholson. Dream cast at the time. It isn't streaming anywhere at the moment.
I'm sorry. I was talking about the series Witches of East End. 🙄 I didn't see the movie Witches of Eastwick. When I searched how to watch the movie, only paid options came up..Amazon Prime, YouTube, Google Play Movies and Fandango all charging $3.79 to $3.99. Witches of East End is available to Hulu subscribers.
