Given the recent events with the USA and the middle east ad the very real possibility of all out war..is anyone beginning to think ofPrepping...or actavly prepping......anything could happen, and very quickly.. Tomorrow the lights might go out and you could have no electricity.. no gas.. Digital money is useless... no access to a computer or your bank ... what would you do ?

Woud you..are you already.... or do you want to Prep ?

if you are already what would be your biggest take-away tips?

Mine would be to ensure you have a souce of flame..lighter/matches etc...
a source of clean water.. either stored water .. and or purifying tablets
Duct tape... holds everything together and patches up leaks..
Candles..
Solar chargers.. for phones or batteries and lights etc..
Solar lights...

People store canned foods galore.. but many forget about the important Can opener...

remember with no electricity, your frozen food will be no good after 48 hours...

...what would you suggest storing if you are / or will be come a Prepper... ?

I will not become a prepper because I believe that what would happen is what you see in so many apocalyptic films. People would be going around in gangs taking what they want and killing anyone that got in their way, and maybe just for fun. I have always been convinced we are only one crisis away from the total loss of humanity. If you want to prep, you would have to have bunker and an extensive armory.
Yeah, that's dark, but it takes very little to set people off. That is seen almost daily in mob actions all over the world.

Hollydolly...our refrigerator just stopped running last month and believe me we lost a lot of food.

And we have an alternate refrigerator for storage. But we didn't know the fridge had stopped because
the digital stuff was still lit up and working. The fridges you buy these days !!! They don't last more than
10 years. It is what it is.

I appreciate your thoughts, but no. Remember Y2K? (When we changed centuries). Did that then. I've worried too much about everything as it is and my health won't take any more overload.

I liked this line from post #2: "If you want to prep, you would have to have bunker and an extensive armory."

Whatever will be will be. If that's the wrong attitude, so be it.

I always have at least a month’s worth of my dog food because they eat a special diet. Although without refrigeration after I opened a can, it wouldn’t be good for more than a day so I’d have to keep throwing them out. They can’t eat dry food because they have sensitive stomachs.

I do have flashlights and batteries stocked up. I also have a charger for my phone that doesn’t need electricity, but eventually that would run out of juice too, and would need to be recharged. Without being able to heat up canned food , I wouldn’t be able to eat it.

I would probably just subsist on peanut butter sandwiches and other things that I have that are ready to eat. The dogs and I are both old and I don’t think either of us would last very long in the type of situation that you describe if it went on for a long time. I don’t think I’d want to either.

with regard charging the phone... a solar charger would be your best bet for that...

if you think you can't eat cold canned food... canned ham, baked beans... soup... all would be palatable cold and wouldn't need heating...

...you bring a good point with regard your animals.. many or on special diets.. if the worst comes to the worst and tomorrow something stops food getting through to the supermarkets... eventually only basic supplies will get through..

I don't know if anyone knows this already but supermarkets used to carry supplies enough for 30 days.. now they only carry 3 days supply, so if that runs out, there would be a big delay on any more deliveries arriving.. days at the very least... so it's important thet you have at least a week if not a minimum of 2 weeks supplies at home for you and your animals..

We're the closest we've been to a world war... so I think we all need to take things a little more seriosuly than we have in the past.,,,with regard supplies... and more importantly medication...

Modern nuclear weapons are vastly more destructive than the 15–20 kiloton bombs used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, with typical warheads today having yields of at least 100 kilotons to several megatons. A single modern weapon can destroy an entire city, causing millions of casualties, with a far greater radius of destruction, intense heat, and radioactive fallout compared to the 1945 attacks.

What would you do if WW3 broke out tomorrow?" My answer was simply: "die hopefully when the nukes hit." I would just want to be as close to the blasts as possible and be done with it. We could all be wiped out in a few hours if the warmongerers aren't bluffing. As someone who is used to modern standards such as indoor plumbing, running water, electricity, modern medicine, wifi, and safe food, I would not want to be a survivor.

I'm not talking about being ''nuked'' tomorrow... I'm talking about a war which has already begun, and people have already died..homes destroyed.... in the middle east... now that could happen in the US & the UK...tomorrow.... or next week.... nothing to do with being nuked, you could just find yourself, without any electricity or gas suppyly,..no oil..no access to a pharmacist ..tomorrow... or the next day... suddenly, without warning... because your town supply has been disconnected due to being bombed... or your supermarkets have been bombed.....you have no internet

When the world gets a little unsettled, I usually figure to "prep" for a large snow storm. I like the old favorites, canned goods, a few gallons of water etc. I figured if I buy what I would use anyway, I am just buying ahead! I usually buy the big pack of tp and towel paper as opposed to the singles when life is unsettled!
Exactly that... precisely.

That's what I do and have done for the longest time..knowing as you rightly say if nothing happens then you'll still have use for those items..

I have food for at least 2 weeks in cans and dried supplies.. particularly high protein items...

I have 3 freezers full..altho' after a couple of days they wouldn't be any good, but I know that if there no electricity to keep them running I would eat the food from the freezer first

I have water.. just enough to keep me going for 3 days ... any more and it would take up too much room in my ordinary daily life..

I also buy TP and Kitchen paper in bulk....anyway always have.. so that wouldn't be a problem

I also have firelighters, candles, matches, solar lamps, etc stored... all because we used to have regular electricity cuts at one time so it became a habit to keep those things on hand..

I also have a good supply of the meds I may need..

I'm lucky that I have the space , and outdoor buildings to store things.. many people do not..

I had already started prepping when I made the 'do you have enough food in your house ' thread, cause a guy on youtube said God gave him a dream that there'd be a war and in the dream he had no food and my ex said God said he had to read the text word by word.

There will be wars. Stop there. So then I started to buy stuff, but I stopped buying more. I do have 4 huge bags of rice and beans, a camping gas thing with gas and seeds and 9 liter of water a person and a water cleaning thing, so if necessary you can even drink from a lake.

An African woman on youtube said: have a very old car cause those are the only ones that can drive then, but I have a nice bike and she said: if the water stops fill your bath immediately.

very good advice.... because people forget not only do they need water to drink and .potentially cook.. but for hygene and for toilets too...

That's where a gas stove is handy. It can be lighted manually. Unfortunately, my new house is ALL electric appliances.
yes I had a gas stove until just last month.. always had gas, and now I've changed to electric, so I will buy a small disposable calor gas stove to put away for emergencies...

I have gas central heating but otherise everything is electric.. but even the GCH can't work without the electric ignition...

You're right Holly, I made presumptions that wars escalate, I should have made clear it was escalation that my prognosis was based upon. Apologies for any misunderstanding.

Yes. I've watched Walking Dead. I fear the gangs too.

We’d be ok for quite a while. We have enough food in our pantry downstairs. We have access to free fresh water down the road. We have a generator for heat and air conditioning. It runs our heat pump, microwave, fridge, well pump, most lights and an outlet downstairs.
We have about 20 lites of gas stored in containers. We have a Woodstove with plenty of dried wood. IMG_2618.jpegIMG_2617.jpeg

The biggest issue with the "Prepper" mentality is that they want to hoard everything they think they will need. For the real SHTF scenario you need to have your great great grandparents hand tools and mentality. Can you plant a garden, Can your own food, cook over a fire? Do you have a draw knife to make a new axe handle? I just came back from a guys trip where they were amazed at my homemade canned SPAM. Should the power grid go down would you be able to dig through your freezer and preserve what in there? We can easily manage 2-3 weeks before the hard work begins, but in that time people will be going crazy. We have weapons and reloading supplies... but of course that also makes us a target.
We both grew up around self-sustained family and have built on those skills we learned from generation before us. We have the luxury of modern technology that makes it easier but retained the old tools and skills.
Our biggest SHTF hoarding.... couple bags of rock salt.

I won't be doing anything different from what I've always done. I live in a place where there are blizzards, tornadoes, and river flooding, so always prepped for those kinds of disasters. I keep the gas tank topped. Plenty of batteries, blankets, candles, etc. Healthy pantry. Enough cash to last for a while if banking gets messed up.

I also live close enough to a nuke plant that I'd probably have to get out for a while in case of a meltdown. But all these are just things I've always done.

Truer in the big cities, but that is no reason to just sit down and give up.

I live in a rural/suburban area. Neighbors would band together to trade and to secure ourselves and to get things done. Everyone would have a job, from babysitting to community cooking to neighborhood security.
