Is Anyone on a Sodium Restricted Diet?

I am supposed to be and have started taking it more seriously now. I am writing down the amount of sodium in each thing I eat. It sure does add up fast, too. It said 2000 mg. of sodium a day or less for those with my liver condition. A doctor had told me no salt but did not tell me any more than that. So I do not shake any salt onto my food now. It seems sodium is in so many products.

I have been getting low sodium V8 Juice for one thing but find it hard to find many things with low sodium. So I guess I'll be having a more bland diet now.

I know those with high blood pressure must restrict salt intake too. I have hepatic portal hypertension so now am on a medicine for that.

I rarely if ever put salt on anything so when I do eat anything with salt in it, I get excessively thirsty since I’m not used to it. Whenever I get my sodium levels checked, it’s always too low which is rare.

Some people switch their salt shaker to something like Zest or a salt alternative. I’m a pepper lover myself. Freshly ground pepper. Yum. I know.... it’s not salt but I wish you the best Ruthanne.

I gave up salt years ago when hubby was diagnosed with high blood pressure. After awhile you will not miss it Ruthanne.

Mrs Dash makes some excellent non salt spice blends which I use sometimes and other times herb blends will do.

Admit though that when I get the craving I do give in and dig the munchies out.

I haven't shaken salt on my food in quite awhile but a lot of food I purchase has a sodium content in the Nutrition Facts on the packaging. I'm watching how much that adds up to. I also like to put pepper and hot sauce on food at times and some other spices, too. Some of the sauces I have bought have such a high sodium content but I do have a small amount of them--often diluting them with water. I also cook with low sodium V8 Juice at times.

I have used "Salt Sense" before which has less sodium but since the dr. told me no salt I have not used even that. I've tried some salt substitutes but didn't like them much. Going to try some other blends.

I have noticed some swelling on my ankles from time to time and then more this past week so I am being more mindful of sodium, increasing water intake too. I also have been doing stretching exercises that help.

I don't believe there is anyone who is not consuming any sodium at all--most of the foods you buy have some level of sodium in them. Also, we need salt for some functions. The body uses sodium to maintain fluid levels. A balance of fluid and sodium is necessary for the health of the heart, liver, and kidneys. It regulates blood fluids and prevents low blood pressure.

Thanks @Keesha and @Lee for your posts.;) I know what you mean about the munchies.. :giggle: I like hummus and pretzels and the sodium content in hummus is pretty high so I only have a little.
