Is Distemper in Dogs still an issue?

I remember one of our dogs caught the disease way back in 1972?
Just now realised I have heard nothing of this disease for decades

Yes it is, but vaccinating dogs against it has helped reduce the transmission of this highly contagious disease.

”Fortunately, due to widespread vaccination against distemper, the disease is less common than it once was.

Distemper in dogs can become serious very quickly, which is why it’s important to bring your dog to a veterinarian promptly if you suspect this disease.”

Wow, I thought it might have been eliminated after all this time.
But I see it is an incurable disease.

My brother is visiting from ten hours further north. He was telling me he had to kill a raccoon with obvious distemper in the last few months.

We keep our dogs vaccinated against distemper and rabies.

My horses are considered a closed herd and we are fairly remote. They get the minimum vaccination for EEE, WEE, & tetanus. Also a rabies vaccine every couple of years.

None of these diseases have been wiped out in the real sense, in the U.S. they’ve been arrested thanks to vaccines, but they still linger.
