Is FACEBOOK on the way out?

To be honest, I created a FACEBOOK page years ago. But I always had a hard time logging in. Plus a friend "befriended" me. He was one of those people, who updated stuff daily. My page is filled with his stuff, but I can't "unfriend" him, without hurting him. So, I haven,t even seen my page in years. If you have a FACEBOOK account, do you still use it/Is FACEBOOK on the way out?

Yes/no...You could unfollow your friend and his posts will not show up on your feed.

Do the "Unfollow" thing or, put the person on a 30-day "HOLD" to where you don't see any of their posts. For personal reasons, wife and I have done the "Unfollow" for our great niece and I have a friend, who is constantly talking about how great Florida is, on a 30-day HOLD so I don't see any of his posts. I just redone the 30-day HOLD again last week.

For a long time, Facebook was THE place for the younger generation to be, their social media of choice. Zukerberg created it after MySpace (remember MySpace?) became popular with teens, but it was a cumbersome site to use. I remember my daughter (early teens at that point) telling me about Facebook while I was still trying to get the hang of MySpace. You had to know some basic HTML coding to create your MySpace page the way you wanted it etc and she was helping walk me through it.

It was a huge relief to go to Facebook because the interface was so much easier! But back in the early 2000's, it was still a place where primarily the young folks hung out.

Nowadays, it's become more and more popular with older people, while that younger set, Milennials mostly, have gravitated towards Instagram and Snapchat. I don't think Facebook is on its way out, I think as the younger set have gravitate towards other social media, older people have discovered the benefits of facebook, so it's balanced out.

I don't do anything with 'social media' other than a few forums, such as this. There is nothing 'social' about social media, too many people taking it too seriously (kids killing themselves because they get bullied online --- beyond believable), and Facebook is the largest depository of info (database) about people in the world. I refuse to go along with that. As you probably know, there are too many trolls, bots, and people posting disinformation.

But to answer the post, no, it won't go anywhere. People are not concerned with their privacy and will continue to use FB although there will be a bit more oversight of it, from everything I read.

Not too young though, think you had to be over 13? Not sure now but do know my oldest grandson wasn’t old enough at the time so he joined using a fake birthdate.

Now he’s never on it but still has his account....mostly on Snapchat and Instagram.

My children don’t post as much as they used to either. I seldom post anything on my page but I belong to a lot of private groups on Facebook and that’s what fills up my feed lately.

My daughter is also in some of the same groups.

edit: this was in reply to Ronnis post....should have quoted her because while I was typing someone else posted.

.

CeeCee it's very common...that fake birthdate thing. There's no facebook oversight that I can tell. Three of my grandkids who aren't 13 yet have facebook accounts, all of whom are on with their parents permission. And anyone can make a facebook account for anyone or anything. I have a couple friends who have facebook accounts for THEIR DOGS!!!! I am not kidding you! Obviously the dogs didn't sign up by themselves. ;)

I know :)

my one niece and another grandson joined with fake birthdates but now they’re all older but it is funny when their birthday pops up...they never changed the fake one.

I have had Facebook for quite a few years now, and since I have friends and family strung out across the country, Facebook is a great way for us to all keep in contact with each other. It also has the Messenger for private messages. I usually use my iMessage program, but it only works for people who have an Apple device; so for everyone else, I use Messenger.

I do not like my Facebook feed filled up with everyone’s posts, either, so I only actually follow my kids, and everyone else, I just look at their pages when I want to see how they are doing.

Like CeeCee mentioned, the Facebook groups are great, and that is also where I spend most of my Facebook time online. There are groups for almost anything a person is interested in, and nothing that is posted in the group shows up on you main page.

Since Facebook is a vary liberal website, many of the more conservative groups have also gone to other similar social media websites, but at this time, none of them seem to be as active as Facebook is.

I hope so. Facebook is invasive, and Zuckerberg is a deceitful opportunist. To be fair, that's the nature of our species. Most people can't or won't rise above their genetics.

I started an account after a class reunion. My classmates hadn't evolved at all. I deleted my account.

Helps me keep up with certain family members, organizations, keep up with music events & fun sites, like cat videos, haha. Anything/anybody I don't care for I Unfollow or Snooze, as suggested above. Here a lot of public agencies like police depts have pages & post notifications of community events, missing persons etc. I just started following the local AFB page to get inside dope on a May air show. So it's really useful at times.
FBis in the process of a multi year construction project south of ABQ, will have acres of servers & at present 1000 construction workers on site daily.
you have to figure out how you want it to work for you as an individual & trim off anything you don't want or need. Stay rational. Nobody being forced to use it.

Exactly right!

I use it to keep up with far away family. I check it a couple of times a week. I mainly visit forums that relate to my hobbies and interests such as this one.

I joined facebook years ago when my 2 grandsons joined so that I could see what they were getting involved in,and I still go in to see what friends of mine post. I even found out on facebook that my brother had passed away because his daughter was too busy to call family. I wanted to quit facebook then but I still like to check up on my grandchildren.

Yes, folks set up accounts for their pets, but it does seen that the younger folks don't use it much, so it's mostly middle agers and us geezer/geezerettes using it now. I only post about once a week but check in several times a day. I have the app on my smart phone.

If you have your audio turned on, you can tell. You you are messaging them, you can tell when they go woff woff.

I use it to keep up with the kids and grand kids. They send me videos of everything that is happening in their lives. Every once in awhile I get a phone call which is music to my ears. Facebook can't compete with that!

No time soon..The pentagon ditched online surveillance same day FB was created. I think it was called life log or something. Heck I'd have to google it or something.
