Is family history important to you?

It should be but then I got lazy then they started charging - so I gave up but it does so inform us of our own traits and can advise us of which directions we might try in life?

My family tree had so many broken branches it would have been hard to remember it all. My family had a few skeletons in the closet I found out as an adult.

My surname in Singapore is Chen. This surname comes from an ancient family, and the family has a complete genealogical record documenting every person born into it. I find this very meaningful, as it proves where we originate from.

When I was a child, my grandfather often held the genealogy that his father had given him and told me stories from the past. (My grandfather was the eldest son, he had 2 brothers, but because he was the eldest, his father gave him the genealogy, while the other 2 brothers had to copy a new one.)

When I was young, I didn’t really understand my grandfather, but as I grew older, I began to understand him more and more.

Now, when I visit my parents at home, I take out that genealogy and look through it.

Then there are the huge containers of old photos, with nothing written on the back to give even the slightest clue about who’s in the picture or where it was taken. It will probably be even worse now that most photos are digital.

My mother had loads of old photos and, fortunately for me, she had written the names of every family member on the back. It was a great help because years ago I googled her uncommon maiden name and came across someone who had done the family history. I recognised a name and realised it was my mother's cousin who had emigrated to Australia. We made contact and I was sent photographs of my great grandparents -which I hadn't seen before - along with their children, one of whom I recognised immediately as my grandfather in his teens.

If you want to find some interesting family facts and stories, get a monthly subscription to newspapers.com . I subscribed for a few months to help in my Ancestry.com family tree work over the winter. I don’t think you need to subscribe to Ancestry.com to use it, however.

Finding skeletons isn't always a bad thing. It shows they were human and made mistakes, it shows how (hopefully) the others kept
things going in the right direction and very possibly even better. I didn't expect to find all saints in my tree believe me.

I had noticed my grandchildren being more interested in looking up their German Heritage records. They do have/had
German Sir Names (yeah I married 2 men with German ancestors and mucked up the blood line ) They even took
German in High School and chose Germany for their Senior trip. At first I was disappointed they weren't asking about both.
Then I had to look at it as, at least they are a bit into it. One Gr-daughter later before having her son did go to Ireland
and enjoyed it and the language. She went to Armagh and walked around it, then shared her feelings with me. I can be
happy with that.
So bloodlines, traditions, speech and even physical structure is getting all mixed, watered down and I can see where this
will slowly cause genealogy to lose interest in coming years. Unless you can make a digital video game of it, it will be lost.

I was mostly interested in the names of past relatives and the ages that they married.
Interesting first and middle names from my past: Arrelious Bonaparte, Myrtice Arvada and Timothy Tarzan.
(I found 4 relatives with Bonaparte somewhere in their names...)

The age gap on one of the past pairings, the father was 31 and Mother was 18.

The most digging I've done was finding out about my Dad, from when he enlisted at 17 and the following
35 years he spent in the Marines and Navy.
I reached out to those who knew him in his units, Islands he fought on, the Ships he served on, Awards, etc.
I found out just what an Amazing Life he led.
