Is hate harmful to the hater?

I was having a discussion with my friend who said hate is necessary to combat evil in the world. I disagree and think one can do the right thing and recognize evil without feeling hate. What say you? Is hate ever necessary? I also say it harms us physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually...what do you think??
 

Yep I agree...hate destroys the soul. I have had reasons to hate people during my life for their despicable actions towards me..God only Knows..... but instead I have no feelings toward them.. as if they never existed.. and don't exist.. they are nothing to me..

I remember trying to explain this to someone about my father..after his years of childhood abuse towards me, and abuse to my mother.. and I said..I have no feelings towards him..absolutely none, it's as tho' he hasn't lived, and doesn't exist ( he was alive at the time).. and they said that couldn't be possible given that he was a blood relation, ..they just didn't understand..

When my father died I felt nothing. No sadness or gladness. Nothing. I think I did hate him when I was younger but at some point realized I was only hurting myself.

If you let it hate can take over your life until you are not actually living.

yep that's my thoughts too... ... the people that have caused me issues have as little space in my head as a stranger in the street..

Hate doesn't combat evil. Goodness and love does.

I agree...hate can be an overused word. People "hate" so many things .......or at least over use it. I mean there have been people and things in my life I have strongly disliked..but I fall short of saying I hate them.
Not sure I would say I never use it...but I procede with caution before deciding to use it
 
To me, "hate" is the strongest word, but unless one loves someone who has hurt them, they cannot hate. They just get angry. Or very angry.

I think love and hate are somehow tied together.

In other words, if one we care for has hurt us, unless we loved them, we don't hate them. We get angry. To be angry is normal and it dissipates after awhile.

And yes, "hate" is a very overused word. Like; I hate liver, or I hate war movies.

No. In any fight, a clear head is necessary. And in combat against evil, it helps to also be virtuous, but it isn't necessary. In fact, it's rarely the case...if the combatants are human, anyway.

So, what does "Gung Ho" actually mean?
 
I think hostile type hate is consuming. It takes a lot of energy to maintain hate, it just seems exhausting to me. I think most people experience varying emotions throughout their days, but hateful people are emotionally crippled and seem to spend all their energy focusing on the hate.

That's the way my huzz has always dealt with his feeling about his late father who was a despicable person. He said he's pretty much a non-person to him. And I've been trying to do the same thing about people who have hurt me; try to act as if they don't exist. It's easier said than done sometimes but seems to be easier on oneself than the constant hate.

yes I understand that you might find it difficult not to feel hate for someone whose done you wrong.. but never mix up hate for Anger... and when the anger subsides.. what's left is no feelings at all for that person..

It's such a feeling for me that if the people who have caused me such distress were on fire and I was the only one with a bucket of water.. I'd pour the water down the drain, because these people don't exist to me..

this is the difference between feeling hared towards someone or something who has caused you pain..and someone who acts on the feelings of hatred due to nothing more than indoctrination...
