Is it better to burn out or fade away?

Burn out - go out full steam ahead.
Fade away - slowly come to the end of life.

Sad tonight, another friend just died from cancer today.
I'm sorry your friend died of cancer. It's hard to bear. Last year one of best old friends also died of cancer. Yesterday I came across poems we had written to each other and it almost made me want to cry. My condolences to you.

My sister-in-law's mother died instantly and without a whimper in the back seat of my sister-in-law's car as they were going out to shop and eat at a mall with another sister. It was an aneurysm I was told. That's the way I would like to go, that is being active and seemingly healthy at an old age, and have the end come unannounced.

As I was sailing along in my 60's and 70's, I thought that I'd be able to continue in this manner forever. No need for knee replacements, etc.. Now in my late 80's I've slowed to a crawl. Need a damn cane to get around. Naps becoming more prevalent. Forgetfulness becoming a part of everyday life. Good hearing starting to diminish.

All of this just crept up on me WITHOUT some dreadful illness or injury.

Enjoy the brightly burning light, while you can, but don't bet on it staying bright until the end.
