Is it cold enough for your heating yet ?

The little one right here by me in the office room is.. this one... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lloytron-F...wicXNhIjoiNC45MyIsInFzcCI6IjQuNTkifQ==&sr=8-4

..but I'm not concerned because I have Gas central heating and altho' the price of gas has shot up, its still cheaper than electricity, so if I have to turn the heating on as the winter progresses it will only be for a short time each day using the central heating..

Several days ago when it was cool and rainy, I changed the little heating/cooling unit in my hotel room to 'Heat' but since then I've had it back on 'Cool'. I suspect that it has secret limits instead of using the temperature I set it at because I can set it down to 65 degrees (18C) and the room will only cool to 70. Too soon to know how much heat it will let me do.

When I had my house I could set both upper and lower temperature limits and it would switch itself back and forth from heat to cool automatically.

I have my heating set on Hive.. and can be remotely set to any temperature I want wherever I am in the world.. I have the app on my phone , and my Mac and that's what I use to control my heating.. water , and lighting..

I could set it to come on automatically at say 18 f as some people do.. but now at the rising cost of gas and electric, I need to just turn it on manually when I notice it getting too cold..

Got the house and shop furnaces up, and running last week, but haven't used them much, as we've had sunny days, and the house gets a lot of passive solar gain. This coming weeks weather will be mid to low 60's, and low 30's at night, breaking into the 20's a few times. Halloween is usually the beginning of winter here too, though some years it will be pretty nice through the end of November. Loving the fall weather.

I avoid technology where possible. I have a thermostat in the hall and thermostatic valves on the individual radiators. The boiler fires up at 6:30 a.m. and heats the house to around 18C. It's then off for most of the day, but it usually fires up in the evening for a short time. We have a wood burning stove in the lounge and we've just started to light it in the evenings.

It's been quite a mild summer so I've used very little heating oil (no gas in many rural areas), but the cost has doubled this year so I'm dreading how much it will cost for a top-up. Still much cheaper than electricity.

It is still very warm here during the day. Once it starts to turn cold I will put on the gas fire, I do not use the baseboard heaters at all. Being October the leaves are usually off the trees, this year hardly any leaves have fallen, I despair for our children's future.

future.

We are still in the low to mid 70’s during the day and upper 40’s to low 50’s at night, so I am still good without turning on the heat. I did put my bed warmer on, but still haven’t used it yet. I am trying to move to a warmer climate. I read on this forum that a poster was moving to Hawaii this fall or winter to be with his son, but I forgot his name. He said he was renting a house and I thought maybe he would be willing to either rent me a bedroom with cooking privileges or go together and sign a joint lease and split all the costs. I spent 2 years in Hawaii with the military and did everything in my power to stay there, but you know how the military works.

I live right in the "heart" of Canada (Nope! Not Ontario). I have been putting the heat on and off now for over 2 weeks. I am one of those "lucky ducky" seniors living in a nice apartment where my monthly rent includes the heat, Air conditioning & water. I can walk around all winter in a short sleeved shirt and never worry about increased heating bills; like I did when I was a home owner.

I am enjoying the cold nights for sleeping! Open the window an hour or two before bedtime in the bedroom but close it when I go to bed. The irony, however, is that I get cold in bed and need to wear socks and maybe an extra blanket. But once I warm up, I am out like a light!
I also have to wear socks and use an extra blanket, or else I won't be able to sleep. My body is very sensitive to cold temps.

It seems like we jumped right from a hot summer into a chilly fall here, too. I am in northern Alabama, so we seldom get a real winter with snow; but it does get cold and really damp because of the humid air here.
I put the electric blanket on the bed, and then I turn it on about an hour before bedtime so that the bed is cozy for us. Then I turn it back off again, since it is chilly, but not cold enough to need heat yet. We seldom use much heat in the bedroom anyway, and in the day, we have an electric heater in the living room that we turn on until it warms up a little bit out here.

I have one of those electric throw wraps that I use when it is full- on winter , but it is only good for when I am sitting in my big chair and knitting or reading, and not when I am moving around in the house.

My son just messaged me and asked if I still knit, because he and Laura left their winter slippers out in Idaho when they moved, and now he said his feet were cold last night.
I had actually made him a pair of socks and slippers for his wife; so I told him they were ready and waiting for him, the next time we see them.
