Is self care / health more or less important to you as you age?

You aren't 18 anymore. Your body is going to do what's it's programed to do. Trying to be physically forever 18 isn't in the cards. Being fit for your age is. I'm no phys-ed guru, but being as active as you possibly can seems to me to be the way to go.
Keep moving for sure. In my job I think there are people who just stopped moving and that's what did them in. I knew a man in his 80's who had two planned hip replacements. He walked daily. He said those first steps were torture and then he loosened up and was OK.

I remember there being a man, 82 I think, in my daughter's jiu-jitsu class years ago and a woman in my weight training class at the gym (again a few years ago now) who was 78.
 
I agree with most of this on the face of it because it makes sense. Not that I'm sure I want to subscribe to it, but it does make sense. -- I don't know, maybe I'm going through some sort of, getting old, tantrum phase.

You know, I'd thought I'd heard something about death row inmates having McDonalds for their last meals. Don't quote me, but I could swear...
please don't say you're getting old... when you're 58 lol... I'm 10 years older.. than you, and altho' recently I've had some ageing conditions get me a bit..I'm fortunate to look and act much younger than the average 68 year old.. at least those around here... so if you're old at 58 I must be ancient..:ROFLMAO:..the one drawback about looking younger than an OAP..is that people tend not to take me seriously when I;m trying to get information for myself with regard to ageing issues. ,..and that includes doctors. Clearly they can see my age while looking at my notes.. but they're looking at me directly, they're not seeing someone who falls into the OAP category.. that can be a really frustrating drawback

Yes, but as drawbacks go, having to convince people you are the age you are because you look much younger... no so bad. ;)
 
I started walking 4 miles a day at 31 and now walk 2. Between menopause and a medication slowing down my metabolism I gained 50lbs.

During covid old fat people were dying so I lost 50lbs. 3 years later I still eat 1600 calories a day and exercise. I rarely drink anything besides coffee and water since I prefer eating my calories. I will be 69 soon.
 
I'm 65 years old. I go to the gym 4 days a week and work out on the weight machines. I either go on the elliptical machine or walk out by the lake afterward.

And @Medusa please remember that exercise... whether working out with weight machines or walking... improves mental health. When I put in my AirPods and work out or walk I can actually experience a feeling that is almost ethereal. But then, I LOVE music.

I have occasional bursitis in my knees, but a few days of Motrin and working out my legs gets rid of it. I went for a massage today and the therapist worked out several knots in my shoulders and calves. I'm ready to go to the gym again.

I enjoy the random hamburger or fried foods, but mostly I try to eat lots of greens, vegetables and healthy foods. My mother lived to 89 y/o without really practicing healthy habits. If I can live to 85 y/o and still be mobile and healthy I will be happy. I'm not giving up.

I totally agree! Physical exercise is not just helpful but essential to mental health. - Actually, it's particularly good for anxiety as (I've read recently) that bilateral movement (walking, etc.) helps to move blood from one side of the brain to the other, sort of evening it out and helping the brain function in a more even way. -- What I read was way more sciency and made more sense, but I have noticed that it does work.

I love music too! So much. Honestly, it is a tool in my coping/healing toolbox.
 
I had a life changing event at age 19 - DIABETES!! I was devasted, quit university and changed my eating habits and lifestyle (which I still follow 60 years later); ie diabetes diet (no sugar, minimal salt, carbs, red meat; more greens) and daily exercise (2 to 3 miles/day walks)
 
I think that I consider it more. The real eye opener was when friends and extended family members started having health and mobility issues. My step sister in particular shocked me with starting to rely on a cane and walker…she must of been about 58 years old. Not if I can help it…

I've noticed doctors, on the whole, aren't what the used to be.

Of course self health is an issue. If I can take care of myself then why choose to be lazy? You snooze. You loose. The lazier and lax you strive to be the worse your body reacts and breaks down the older we get. I am always moving to achieve a healthier lifestyle and a well adjusted mindset.
