I posted this in the computer section but think this might help a lot of people. A friend showed me these youtube videos he ran across, quite different but funny, puts a spin on learning if you're like me on the computer. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeLnBXaMM0er7mffUTj4_nw hope its ok to share, just thought it might help some of us older folk, I started wacthing the videos, not so serious of a way to learn, seems helpful. If it's not ok to share things like this just let me know and I'll promptly remove this. Thanks

Redneck is a derogatory term currently applied to some lower-class and working class Southerners. The term, which came into common usage in the 1930's, is derived from the redneck’s beginnings as a “yeoman farmer” whose necks would burn as they toiled in the fields . . .
Rednecks are not necessarily poor and not necessarily farmers, although rednecks can certainly be each of these things. What differentiates rednecks from poor whites is the perception of rednecks as racist, hot-headed, too physical, violent, uncouth, loud, mean, uneducated and proud of it. The stereotypes follow: Rednecks do not adopt politically correct speech and are proud to be brutally honest about their feelings about nonwhites. Rednecks like to fight to solve their problems, preferring to beat someone at a street dance than to talk about the problem and solve it diplomatically. Rednecks come to the dinner table barefooted not because they have no shoes, but to specifically sneer at rules. Redneck women smoke cigarettes, chew gum, and wear curlers and put on makeup in public. The redneck rebels against education and against standard English, refusing to speak as others would have him or her speak. Rednecks hunt proudly, take baths only occasionally, and work on old cars in their front yard. Rednecks are characterised by excess; they eat too much, drink too much, smoke too much, play too hard, and live too hard. The outsider’s perception of all these things differentiates the redneck from the poor white.

The history of different societies has always been marked by periods of persecution and violence, sometimes extreme, targeting the outsider, that is the enemy of the time. Whilst there are many such groups that don't endear themselves, who live on the edge of the law of the land, who take without contributing, it's still stigmatising them, and more importantly, oneself, to use offensive terminology. Treating others in the same way as one would wish to be treated, that's the real definition of being civilised.

I always thought redneck was a derogatory, condescending term. I grew up in N. Louisiana. Recently I went to Panama City and learned that it was called by some the "Redneck Riviera" I thought that was offensive. It is also called Emerald Coast which considering the colors of the gulf waters IMO is MUCH more appropriate.

What a crock. Being a southerner all my life, I'd say "no, it is not an offensive term." Many of us refer to ourselves as rednecks; it has nothing to do with race or any of that crap. Good grief.

People need to stop looking so hard for another reason to be offended.

It's also called "L.A." (Lower Alabama), due to the large number of Alabama tourists.

Thank you c'est moi...I appreciate your saying you disagree. I don't consider race as having anything to do with rednecks. I could be totally wrong and off base because frankly I do not think I ever met anyone who I would consider a redneck. I grew up in a college town Ruston, La.
One of the characteristics I attributed to rednecks were those who made moonshine..illegally of course.

Well, my neck's a little red, having grown up in very Southern Ohio. The term itself is not offensive to me, but the assumptions by some folks that it is a symbol of racism and ignorance and lack of civility is offensive. However, I have learned that folks who use the term in such a disparaging manner are usually just projecting their own faults on to others.

You got that right C'est Moi: Many of us do refer to ourselves as rednecks. Has nothing to do with race, etc. I'm that southern girl too!

I actually didn't know that "Redneck" was a derogatory term. Everybody in my town is a redneck, rural + middle/lower middle-class whites(mostly).
White Trash is definitely a derogatory term, I think that doesn't need explained.
Yep, agree, I'm an Okie but grew up in Arkansas, so....

I see it as a self deprecating term used by southerners to describe themselves and nothing more. I just assumed the red neck came from being out in the field farming all day.

adjective: self-deprecating
  1. modest about or critical of oneself, especially humorously so.
    "self-deprecating jokes"

Sure it's offensive and would put Jeff Foxworthy out of business. And we'd all lose something from that.
