Is There Anyone Here Who Doesn't Drive Anymore?

We live in a rural area about 10 miles from the nearest town and there is no other transportation except
driving. It is necessary for us to drive ourselves but we don't go to the city, where traffic is heavy,
unless we have to.
How long one drives depends on eyesight and general health. So far we are both in fairly good health and
capable of driving.
We are thinking of looking for a newer car sometime soon as the one we have is over five years old and after that
there seems to be maintenance bills so might as well have a monthly payment.
If our health deteriorates we will have to move to an apartment in town and I am not looking forward to that.

Yes I drive every day. I live in a fairly rural area, so a car is a necessity, but apart from that I need it to get to work, and as I'm still in my 50's I don't really consider myself a senior anyway in that sense.

I cannot get free bus travel ias oakapple does, because that only comes after retirement age, and I have 8 or 9 years before I am of pensionable age anyway.

TBH if I didn't have my car it would be like losing a limb!!

Still driving. Unfortunately I recently had to check on the state procedures to revoke another senior's license. Haven't done it yet but it's a two fold problem now. A senior came to me in a panic claiming they hit a car/cars and damaged the side of their car. Some damage appears to be old and not necessarily their fault-supermarket cart perhaps. The other damage shows they had to hit a rock hard item, this wasn't damage from two cars colliding or touching. Third I recommended going to the police in that area but after talking one of their senior friends who is scared poopless of losing their license they decided not ask the police if there was an accident at that address. This person has dinged my car and obviously a lot of others judging by all the marks on their car and bumper which are added to monthly.

It's troubling because they feel guilty but scarey because they don't know what they hit. They said it happened at night so when they stopped they couldn't see anything then or the following day. I drove with them to the area less than a day later. No sign of accident there including broken reflector glass, bumper parts etc. I also don't like the fact they won't TALK to the police. If they did hit someone they now have damage to be repaired and they have a leaving the scene of an accident on them now. I told them if you don't even know what kind of car you hit or there is no report of an accident there the police might not even take a report on minor damage. I told them it shows good intention. I can't emphasize this enough that even though their damage minor it was from a rock solid direct hit of something.

I also told they need to take a drivers ed course. Relying on 60 year old driving lessons isn't going to cut it now. They never had a job where they had to drive or had a truck so their driving skills never had to evolve. They get insulted when you say driver's ed/ But it's scarey driving with them at times. They simply don't care what's going on around them. They are selfish when they drive.

Should they come off the road? I think their driving career can still be salvaged or even improved.BUT if their attitude is such they will try to avoid the consequences of their driving mishaps I don't want them on the road.

This is another reason I don't want any part of Rural living.. and now much prefer to live in or at least very close to a larger city; If you live out in the sticks.. and are no longer able to drive and you don't have family or close friends that will cart you around.. how do you live? So no country life for me.
