Before we moved to Edison, California we lived in Eureka. Gas was almost $7 a gallon. I could barely afford to drive to the grocery store that was 4 blocks from my house. Here in Edison, and all of the Bakersfield metro area, gas is an average of $3 to $3.50. It's $4.50 in Eureka now. Which is good because Bakersfield is massive, and almost everything we need to do is on the west side of the city, and Edison is outside the city limits on the east side. Five miles each way to get to our Doctor's office, 14 miles to Costco and back, 17 if we also go to Winco, etc. We have to drive almost five miles just to get a decent cuppa Joe. I hate big cities. And I sorely miss Eureka...

My wife and I bought a new car in 2015, a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan (which since it was white and my wife was always ferrying kids around to soccer games, I dubbed it the USS Soccer Mom) which I made the mistake of doing in December, and now it's nine years old and has a few curable (for the right price) issues. We traded in our old car, which we had been given a repair estimate to fix everything that was going wrong with it of $6,000.

Our mechanic was an old friend, and he checked the car out "off the books" and when he told us all the problems he found, he said we had two options for repairs. Fix only what you absolutely have to, or trade it in on an "as is" basis. So we did that and the Dodge dealership gave us $1,200 for it, without even giving it a quick once over.
 

Gasoline here is currently $2.979/gallon, up 10 cents from a year ago. Heating oil is currently $3.07/gallon, down 41 cents from a year ago. Overall our real cost of living has increased over the past year . . . and five years . . . and ten years . . . and 20 years . . . :rolleyes:

I'm wrong to protect our children. Our children are middle aged adults. Many of our grandchildren are also adults. It's their fault too. We're all guilty. AND 🎵We sold our souls to the company

We will never see prices go down or increase in personal ownership ever again. Happy now?
 
This latest round of inflation has been amazing and I agree that the best that we can hope for is that prices will eventually stabilize.

I still believe that many of us confuse the cost of living with the cost of a lifestyle that we simply can’t sustain.

I absolutely believe that if young people manage their wants and focus on their needs they will be able to continue to buy homes, raise children, have comfortable retirements, etc…
 
Yes, I have noticed price decreases on a few items. D3 vitamins and septic line root killer on Amazon and Diamond brand walnuts at the grocery store. Probably could find a bunch more. It’s supply-demand at work with competition with other suppliers. Wish it would catch on with our home store Menards!

Menards is the Home Depot of the upper midwest.
 
Gas is down here but goes up and down a lot. Electricity went down due to having Florida governor taking over control of prices but now city is back in charge so expect it to go higher. Groceries keep going higher and other products, too.
 
I heard an interesting story on the local news this morning. It was about how drugs that make you lose weight (like Ozempic or similar) are changing the economy. The potato chips sales went down 11% lately and sales of fresh produce went up. It will be interesting to see changes in prices in these following months.

I used to pay about $30.00 for my cats insulin vial. That would last me 3 months kept in the fridge.

I just looked up the price of a Lantus pen. If someone takes 10 units a day, it will last for some time. But some people take much higher amounts than that.

I agree with you on the greed. It's gone past money for research and a decent profit. It is greed. These drug advertisements make me want to scream.

Because those of us that are retired are dependent on the younger generations to do all the work and pay the social security taxes that support us. Buy hey, let's just let the schools go to crap so that the kids get lousy educations and end up becoming young thugs that mug us old people for drug money.

I don’t believe that the $35.00 cap on insulin was part of the recent executive order.

My zero premium advantage plan for 2025 has 30 day supplies of Lantus capped at $42.00 and 90 day supplies capped at $84.00 from a preferred pharmacy. The dosage doesn’t effect the price.

Who paid for YOUR school? Retired people were among those who did. We all pay for school, that is our nation's future.

One topic I heard much about on the news in 2008 is the threat of "hyperinflation." Although it seems to escape notice lately, the United States is not immune.

In regard to post #44, which came thru as I was writing this post: my property tax statement identifies most of my taxes are for schools.

I certainly hope the tariff talk is merely a bluff. Any tariffs placed on imports will ultimately be paid by the consumer.
