I swore I saw the address Cardiff, Wales here somewhere. I need to ask a question of him or her unless I was just imagining it. Does anyone know?
 

No-but I live a mere 18 miles away..And spend a lot of time there.And went to University there.If your question is about Cardiff I may be able to help.And Gaer is an estate in Newport!
 
Oh, I'm so glad to find you! Here goes! My whole life I was told I was 100% Scandinavian. My Dad died thinking the same thing. A recent DNA test told me my Dad was a good deal Irish and Welsh! I looked on line and found a Gaer hotel, a Gaer river, a Gaer Street, a Gaer school and a Gaer Fort near Newport, Wales, but nothing about them. I was proud to be Norse but they were so solemn. I didn't quite fit in because I had a little devil in me. Now I know why! Are there any people named Gaer there or is it an ancient name? What do you mean "an estate"? Why are all these places named Gaer? Can you tell me anything about the Gaer name or where it comes from? I might have relatives there! How would I find out? Does everyone speak English in Wales? This is so exciting for me! I'dlove to know anything at all that you could tell me! Thanks!

I presume you already know that the welsh word Gaer simply means camp or fortress... and when you think that Wales at one time had 600 castles, then that's a lot of fortresses...
 
Gaer-I am posting this again because something has gonecwrong—Gaer comes from Caer which is Welsh for fort.And there are lots of iron age and Roman forts dotted about Wales.Gaer is a district of Newport and is quite a large housing estate in one of the higher parts of town.In fact i have a friend who lives there.
Everyone in Wales does speak English but about 20 % of the population speak Welsh-including me- and that is growing year on year(the Welsh language declined because of 19 th century government policy).We have a Welsh Language TV and radio station.
Now Welsh history happens to be an interest of mine so i will see what i can find about the Gaer area of Newport.The Welsh name for Newport is Casnewydd which means New Castle.
I am not aware of anyone named Gaer -as a Surname or Christian name but that doesn’t mean there isn’t.
If i find any more about The Gaer-as the locals call it-i shall send it to you.And anything you want to ask post here or PM me.
I Will add that i also have Irish ancestry and have a Gaelic surname that means the male descendant of the chief.
I live in a largish town five miles from Newport.

It seems the name Gaer also has Jewish origins but in this instance has nothing to do with Caer and forts.

And Gaer is pronounced gare like in care.

Was the Gaer fort built to fight the Romans or was it a group of people clustering together for protection? I wonder who was the first Gaer? I don't mean to put you out or cause you any work but I am SO GRATEFUL for your reply! Ancestry.com did not help in this, but I recieved a lot of info on my Mother's side. When I look at photos of Wales, I swear I lived there before! It feels like home to me. Even the Celtic language seems familiar. Well, That's beside the point. I thank you SO MUCH!!!!!

i am a bloke-
No problems looking things up.This particular Gaer Fort is Iron age and pre dates the Romans who were prominent in the area.Especially in Caerleon which is rich with Roman remains.
Wales is a lovely place, beautiful and rich in History.But i am biased!There is lots about us on you tube.

I am not Welsh, I still enjoy reading any history, and I have
travelled some there.

Catlady: Thanks for the link. I've seen it. My Grandmother is on it. I was seeking to find if any Gaers live in Wales or if the name has died out. This young man has graciously offered to keep an eye out, has sent me the above video and gave info to connect with the Newport, Wales chamber. I'm good!
 
Good morning Gaer, I was thinking about your quest
and decided as somebody in you past family said that
they were Norse, they might have had an accent that
was not like a Welsh or English one, but sounded really
foreign.

This thought reminded me that lots and lots of Welsh
miners emigrated to Patagonia in Southern Argentina,
they started going there in the mid1800s and continued
doing so into the 1920s, the Welsh Language is spoken
and many travel to Wales for the Eisteddfod every year.
