Do you consider giving advice and writing constructive comments and posts
volunteering? Would you say it is a volunteer job?

Not in a conventional sense because it is anonymous.
It is sort of a secret.
I am also on a relationship site that I give advice on.
Is that volunteering?

I never thought of it as such. I think of it as conversation with other folks from other places.

I wish that they would fill in the place telling us what state/province they are in, if they are afraid to tell us what city.

I agree with others it's just a pleasant way to pass the time.

Years ago we would have sat on the porch and talked to the folks next door.

Today we spend a fortune on equipment and internet service to talk to folks on the other side of the world.

The only thing that has really changed is the cost of the conversation.

I don't think I'm volunteering...to be on a forum....As I got older I have more time to sit and go on a forum on the lap top......I never did this when I was working....

I've been on one forum for 10 years.....Never met anyone but do keep in touch with some on email....I don't do Face Book....

Volunteering suggests working for free and I don’t consider conversing with others as a job.
Like others have said ,it’s just a pleasant past time

To volunteer suggests choosing to act in recognition of a need, with an attitude of social responsibility and without concern for monetary profit, going beyond one's basic obligations. I’m not driven to post here to fulfil a social responsibility, nor do I consider it any kind of obligation.

I agree with you there, Manatee. Someone's "weather report" or local news comment is totally meaningless unless you have at least some idea of where they happen to be. I happen to be in Maine right now and I usually state it if I'm mentioning the temps. or weather.

I think the internet is a great place to ask for advice . You can get a much better perspective on things when you have diversity and forum members can offer just that. In fact that’s one of the great things about the internet.

I wish folks would at least say what state they live in also. I don't care if people know I live in Houston but was brought up in rural Louisiana. Southern here all the way!!

But what if someone asks?

They best not ask fm

as for me...I'll spill my guts

a line is open for the next caller, but only for an hour or so
it's getting near my beddy-bye time

Its not volunteering at all. I see nothing wrong with asking advice if you want it. I don't think I ever ask for others advice on a forum, but I usually seek my own counsel and have a lot of confidence in my own opinions. I do give others advice if they ask for it on a forum though.

I don't think it's giving or asking for advice, but more like asking for or giving opinions. Advice can be risky--to the giver and to the taker.

You are probably helping by volunteering information.

Or volunteering information that helps.

Mike.
