Is your collection of medications getting bigger?

As of now, no prescription drugs at all.

Me, too...you got it Bonnie, the "knock on wood" especially!

Had an old friend that had smoked for ages . He went to the doc and the doc told him he had "half a lung" and was going to die within a couple years. Friend told the doc "the @#$% I am, I'll bury you."
And he did. Where there's a will, there's a way, I guess.

That happens, of course. The far more common story is being lived out by one of my in-laws. He smoked from his early teens until finally quitting in his mid-60s after a lung cancer scare. At 74 he's got very little time left (probably months) due to final stage COPD, a very unpleasant way to exit.

Yes, my dad died at 62, worked in a foundry when he was young and smoked Camels all his life. Funny though, he never wanted to get old - didn't like old people, and even though he was disabled for 9 years before he died, he died at home and took care of himself right up till the end. He used to say "God and I got a deal". It is what it is, huh.

Only two, one of which (thyroid) I've been taking since age 20. Unless you're counting supplements like vitamin D3, turmeric, B complex and glucosamine. I seem to be fairly healthy, knock wood.
One of the 3 pills my doctor in 2012 wanted me to take was for low thyroid (hypothyroidism). He also told me that once I started taking it it would have to be for life, I could not stop it. The other two pills were for BP and cholesterol. Both BP and cholesterol, unless hereditary, can be controlled with proper diet, I chose the second option of diet.

I don't really count supplements as drugs, unless one is taking too many per day. In my 30's I subscribed to the magazine Prevention and eventually I started taking like 9 vitamins per day. Eventually taking all those pills became morbid, now I only take one Centrum Silver a day just for insurance that I am getting at least the minimum of vitamins.

My father was a 1-2 pack a day smoker. One day in his early 60's he went to see the doctor and stopped smoking cold turkey. The doctor had found white spots in the back of his throat. My father died at age 82 from stomach cancer. I asked my doctor about it, how come he didn't die of lung cancer, she said that cancer will attack the weakest organ and obviously he had strong lungs. I don't know if I believe it, but she was the doctor and I am not. I also hear about people who smoke and drink and eat greasy food making it into their 90's and even centenarians. Strong genes?

If you want to know how old a tree is, you count the rings in its trunk. If you want to know how old a human is, you count the number of meds in the medicine cabinet. Is your collection of medications getting bigger? I'm up to 8,= 73.
My doctor has cut my medications back.
When they find out a medication has adverse reactions, they try to take people off that medication.

Yes, I knew it would be for life when I started them. However, my symptoms were so clear that even the nurse was able to diagnose me prior to the blood test proving it out. No regrets on taking the meds. My health improved within weeks.

In your case, having the problem at 20, you HAD to take it, I didn't mean to imply you should not. My daughter, now 55, lost her thyroid function right after she was born. She has had to take a pill every day since shortly after birth. If she does not, after few days she will go into shock and slip into a coma. So, make sure you keep taking it and stay healthy.

When my doctor wanted to prescribe it for me I was already 69 and most of the symptoms of low thyroid are ''old age symptoms'' so I refused to take it and 8 years later I still feel mostly the same. I'm now 77 and not planning to live forever, anyway. Somebody once told me that I am a ''fatalist", I rather think of myself as a ''realist''.
