Italian Village of Ollolai Offers $1 Homes to Americans Who Want To Quit U.S. After Donald Trump’s Election Win

Americans who are considering leaving the U.S. in the wake of Donald Trump‘s victory in the 2024 presidential election are being offered the opportunity to snap up a new home in Italy—for the bargain price of $1.
Just two weeks after Trump beat Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the race for the White House, an Italian village called Ollolai, on the island of Sardinia, has made a tempting offer to would-be expats: the chance to buy an extraordinarily cheap “escape” in a picturesque village far away from U.S. politics.
“Are you [worn] out by global politics? Looking to embrace a more balanced lifestyle while securing new opportunities?” a website created to advertise the properties asks. “It’s time to start building your European escape in the stunning paradise of Sardinia.”

The website has yet to list any of the homes that will be available to potential buyers, however it notes that the prices will start at 1 euro—around $1.05 US—and go up to €100,000.
Village mayor Francesco Columbu told CNN that the available properties will be grouped into three different tiers: those that will be offered as free temporary accommodations for “certain digital nomads,” others that are in desperate need of renovations and will be sold for 1 euro, and others that are ready to live in and will start at €100,000.

Two weeks after Trump beat Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the race for the White House, an Italian village called Ollolai, on the island of Sardinia, has made a tempting offer to would-be expats.

It is not the first time the village has put such cheap homes on the market. In fact, the website notes that Ollolai is the “birthplace of the global €1 house phenomenon,” having offered up a bevvy of abandoned homes for the bargain price back in 2018 in an attempt to lure in new residents and revive the local economy after years of decreasing population rates.
The scheme saw buyers rushing in from all over the world, many of whom readily snapped up the cheap homes, despite their derelict states, and immediately set to work turning them into a dream property.
This time, however, Mayor Columbu says he’s got his sights set on Americans, specifically, telling CNN that he revived the €1 house scheme as soon as he realized that there are people from the U.S. who are considering quitting their home country because of Trump’s win.
“We just really want, and will focus on, Americans above all,” he told the outlet. “We can’t, of course, ban people from other countries to apply; but Americans will have a fast-track procedure. We are betting on them to help us revive the village, they are our winning card.
“Of course, we can’t specifically mention the name of one U.S. president who just got elected, but we all know that he’s the one from whom many Americans want to get away from now and leave the country.”
Columbu adds that he has set up a team of experts who will help new buyers navigate every aspect of their property purchase, from securing workers to helping with renovations to dealing with paperwork and permits.

Ollolai is offering homebuyers the chance to snap up a property for as little as 1 euro—which equates to $1.05 US.

Many of the homes have been abandoned for years and are in need of significant renovations.

However, Columbu and his staff have their work cut out for them. According to the mayor, only 10 1-euro homes have been purchased and fully renovated since they launched the scheme in 2018.
Still, he is optimistic that this latest offer will help to lure in many more home owners, noting that there are no requirements for Americans who wish to buy one of the homes, and those who do purchase a property will be able to use it as they wish (within reason, of course) whether it is as a full-time residence or as a vacation home.
And the website notes that, despite its declining population, Ollolai has plenty of alluring aspects to help sweeten the deal, from historical culture to delicious food.
“Nestled in pristine nature, surrounded by incredible cuisine, and immersed in a community with ancient traditions, in the rare Earth’s Blue Zone, Ollolai is the perfect destination to reconnect, recharge, and embrace a new way of life,” it states.
“Discover an array of properties from the originators of the €1 house global phenomenon. Whether you’re searching for a €1 house to renovate or a move-in-ready home, we’ll guide you through every step of your journey, from arranging viewings to finding contractors and navigating the necessary bureaucracy.”
