Itching scalp/ body without rash

I have recently started itching at various parts of body and scalp, there are no visible signs ie rash or dandruff or redness, it can be quite intense with a burning sensation and occurs randomly for varying time periods.

I went through that episode and it was mainly on my back.

It could be an allergy. It could be the soap you use on your clothes to wash them. Even a shampoo. Try a baby shampoo on your hair.

There are a few things to check out. Maybe even a food allergy.

I was prescribed a cream to apply via prescription. It worked well but it's tough to apply by yourself. The pharmacist advised using the back of a wooden spoon. I tried a small paint roller. It worked well.

You should get a doctor to check it out. It might even be shingles starting.

Itching can also be a sign of liver problems. My only suggestion is to see a doctor.

Yes, I have read that itchy skin can be a sign of liver problems. As I don't know enough about it, I didn't want to be alarmist. Best see your doctor, melross

I know first hand about liver disease and at our age feel someone needs to know this is a sign--it may be something else too of course.

Thanks for your reply's and advice. I would like to add to my original post in the hope I might here from someone who has experienced the same type of symptoms. in the past I have suffered with a range of itchy skin conditions including Eczema,Psoriasis, and a few fungal infections, however these have all been accompanied by a visible rash and have responded with varying decrees of success to medication. This episode is new to me, so I have heeded your advice and booked a GP appointment (long wait unfortunately) I am hoping .will be able to diagnose the problem or refer me to specialist. I will let you know how I get on.

I HAD A BOUT OF BACK ITCHING LASTED FOR A FEW MONTHS =I THOUGHT IT WAS SHINGLES '
oop's sorry type went big lol...but no it wasnt' and boy did I itch - I got myself a back scracther lol it helped but did not cure it ,
so I put it down to body wash shower gel - and changed the softner in the wash as well -- ok now ]

I had some itching problems in the past and used coconut oil externally and internally (1 spoon daily), and it subsided. Of course it's never a bad idea to see a doctor if you suspect it may be something more serious.

I was getting some really itchy skin for quite a while and couldn't figure out what was causing it. Then I believe I finally tracked it down to our heater drying out the air in the house when it was running a lot. So I bought a humidifier last Fall and that seemed to do the trick. Much better now .. ;)

I do and it is my nerves. (doc seys) I mix up 3 cups water- a half cup baking soda- cup of vinegar -( it bubbles) get in the shower and pour it on my head and all over my body. Don't laugh it works, Hells the bells I hope its not my liver I have enough wrong with me without my main organ in my body going KAPUT.

Yep. Great cheap solution with great anti fungal , anti bacterial properties. Some other natural things to try is borax: a cup of borax along with Epsom salts or sea salt bath. Original listerine dabbed on the scalp works good. Tar or tea tree oil shampoo.
Mint oil is good for fungal issues.
Note: not to be used all at once
A doctors appointment is recommended to rule anything out.
Good luck to you.

It's most likely a non serious reason. But sometimes a very rare but serious reason for itching without a rash is when the bile duct is blocked and begins to seep into the skin. Eventually one looks a little yellow (Jaundice). It happened to my mother in early stages of pancreatic cancer. Like I said...it's rare...so don't be alarmed by my post but knowledge is always good to keep in your back pocket. My mother was also feeling tired and sick.

Her doctors didn't ever mention jaundice (nor suspect PC at first). They just gave her steroid cream and dandruff shampoo to topically treat the itching. I'm the only one that noticed she looked jaundiced...and that's when the docs looked more closely and found the blocked bile duct. It was such a light yellow that my 2 sisters even disagreed with me about jaundice.
