It's been a bitter-sweet weekend for me.

squatting dog

Remember when... thirty seemed so old.
Happy that I got to record a song with some of my good friends.
My childhood pal (Gordon) somehow arranged to have some studio musicians work with us. A jar of honey helped my aching throat.

It was only after we were finished, that one of the musicians told me that Gordon has stage 4 pancreatic cancer and was heading back north to NY to be with family. He has always been a private kind of guy. I was telling "D" this and she mentioned that she is heading back to Az. soon. (Flagstaff I think).

Gordon... I'm honored to have what may be your final recording. I wish you God speed.

Forgot to put up the lyrics.

(verse 1)
Woke up to some thunder,
It was only a summer rain.
Still it took me back to ’69,
Where the jungle taught us pain.
Saw some faces in the lightning,
Heard 'em laughing in the rain.
Before the coffee even brewed...
By the time the coffee brewed,
I was halfway there again.

(chorus)
On the downhill side of life,
Got some grey in my beard.
But I keep rolling with my darlin',
Cause she's all I ever need.
As I upshift through the memories,
Hear her humming soft and low.
I know I've made it home,
That's all I need to know

(verse 2)
She held me when the shakes came,
No need to ask me why.
Wiped the sweat, calmed the storm,
And looked me in the eye.
Said "You're more than what you did back then",
"more than what you saw".
So put away that bottle son,
You don't need it anymore.

(chorus)
On the downhill side of life,
Got some grey in my beard.
But I keep rolling with my darlin',
Cause she's all I ever need.
As I upshift through the memories,
Hear her humming soft and low.
I know I've made it home,
That's all I need to know.

(music interlude)

(sad violin playing)
(verse 3)
Well, the roll call’s get shorter,
with every passing year.
Another flag that folds at sunrise,
Another empty glass of beer.
I heard about this honor flight,
but I have to wonder why.
who goes to stand there in the brush,
where you watched your buddy die.

(outro chorus singing it soft and low)
So, On this downhill side of life,
As my boot prints fade away.
highways, her and home,
helped me find my way.

(soft ending)
Yeah, highways, her and home,
you carried me through hell
So, highways, her and home,
Is a story we can tell...

(music fade)

It sounds great squatting dog. I’m so sorry about your friend. I wish I could say something to make you feel better.

Bittersweet and then some, so sorry for your sorrow 🤗 I got shivers in my spine listening to that, blows me away.
Raise a glass to you and your friend for this gift he gave so lovingly, it turned out a Beautiful Song.
I know it will be dear to your heart forever. You were fantastic, Love It!
