It's gonna snow, raid the stores for bread and milk!!!

According to one of my local weather apps, there is a very large front moving from West to East across Tennessee. Today, it's gonna rain like crazy, flash flooding is possible, but temps are gonna hit the 60's. Meanwhile, arctic air out west will be racing across the nation, arriving in my neck of the woods Saturday night, which should then catch up to the precipitation and transition from rain to a wintry mix/freezing rain, and eventually to snow sometime very late Saturday night. The accompanying severe drop in temperatures will mean that there will be slick spots, ice, etc, affecting travel Sunday along with the 1" to 2" of snow also predicted.

Nashville doesn't get much snow, sometimes none at all, though the temperatures do fall considerably in the winter, sometimes into the teens. When snow IS predicted, the locals go crazy! People literally flock the grocery stores to stock up on "necessities" and I'm not kidding you when I say the bread and milk aisles are typically cleaned out!! There are so many jokes that float around about "milk sandwiches" and the like with the accompanying ridicule about Nashville taking the possibility of snow so seriously that they will rush to the grocery stores and the gas stations to "get prepared." It's especially funny when so often the prediction of snow is wrong and there's none at all, or a mere dusting. TDOT has been issuing bulletins about salting the roads and getting all kinds of heat because they CAN'T put the brine mix down when it's raining! I mean, duh!!!

tldr: Nashville is ridiculous when it comes to the potential for snow events. What about where you live, how do you prepare for severe weather?

Back in the days when I was assigned to Turnpike duty and depending in what part of the state I was working at the time, we would call in extra Troopers so we would be able to quickly respond to the number of accidents that was about to occur.

Today, we are expecting heavy snow in the western part of the state and rain with sleet turning to snow in the eastern part. If the weatherman doesn’t disappoint, it will be a very busy day for the Road Warriors, as we refer to them.
 

I hated snow storms back when I was delivering bread. The bakery couldn’t make enough, even at full capacity, the store managers were screaming at us for more bread...is that all you got? I had thirty some daily stops and the last few stores were usually out of luck. I did have a truckful of donuts though. :rolleyes:
 
Since we got our new freezer, I have been slowly stocking up over the past couple months. I am set. I drove by the grocery store today on the way home from visiting Rick. Just waved at all the cars and drove on home. I am settling in for the next day or two, and will not starve.
 
Kind of a nice feeling, eh!
I cook in fits and starts, but recently have been
wanting home cooked meals rather that the caterer I use, so today
I put 6 meals and 4 containers of soup in the freezer.
 
Well, it sure did get cold, still is brrrrrr! In the teens, and will be today, but given that this is Nashville, it's going up to 50 tomorrow!!

The predicted "snow event" was very mild. As our local weather website put it:

This was a decks, mailboxes, sidewalks, garden gnomes, grills, and fence tops event.
There just wasn’t enough snow. Winds too strong. Ground warm and unreceptive, like that date you stood up at a Miami restaurant one June Saturday.

I have about 75 bottles of Merlot, just in case we have a blizzard here in the greater Phoenix area. It pays to be prepared. :cool:
 
Here, they stock up on bread, milk, and toilet paper. I've never figured out why. Even with a blizzard, they might be stuck in the house for a couple of days.
